To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great multitool and love the action and magnetic closing feature but scissors are so-so

It's almost perfect, but I do not like the scissors, they're too stubby/short, yet too wide/big/substantial. So they're too small for anything but fine work, but they aren't too bulky for fine work.

Otherwise, the knife blades are great, easy to open, and lock/unlock easily. The bottle opener takes getting used to but is compact and nice. I haven't much used the saw but this looks exactly like ones I've used in the past with other tools.

The one I got came with a nylon case, and I like that as it lets me keep it in my computer bag and it won't scratch anything in there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, one problem

This is a great multi-tool. I live down the street from SOG and am pretty loyal but liked the one-handed features and trust Leatherman too. This lived up to the promises and the tools are great. The only issue is the pocket clip broke (1 month in). It didn't bend, it broke. Waiting to here from Leatherman about a fix. I am confident they will make it right.
The tools itself seems very well built, easy to use and has almost every tool I need for EDC.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's... Not a WAVE, but still better than many.

* revising my original post. At first I felt like I was beta testing a leatherman prototype, but after a week of using it and testing it out, it's actually pretty sweet. The pliers seize up a bit when you use them, but they work loose and seem to stop doing this after a while. All the tools including the awl work fantastic, except the file is just too darn small for my liking. It's super fun to play with. I'd say this is a fancy wingman in a way. If you want a bit more tool, and something that will survive the apocalypse, I'd go wave or it's variants. If you just really want to give the new line a try like I did, go for it. It's worth having in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool

The model Free P4 is my second Leatherman.
I also own an early model Leatherman which must be close to 30 years old. It’s not the first tool I reach for when I need one. After nearly 50 years as a DIYer, handyman, and shade tree auto mechanic, I have single-use tools for almost every need and most of them work better than the tools on the Leatherman. But this old friend has been on my belt whenever I have left the house knowing that my other tools will temporarily be out of reach.
I’ve had occasion to use it hiking, hunting, gardening, travelling overseas, socializing, and at my office job. Tightening tiny eyeglass screws, repairing barbed wire fences , emergency auto repairs, opening cans and bottles, pulling thorns and splinters, cutting, prying, filing, crimping, punching and reaming holes in leather and thin metal… when a need arose, it was rare indeed that this old Leatherman couldn’t help out somehow. And by keeping the knife blade sharp and dressing the awl point and the screwdriver blades a time or two, it has remained like new.
There were two drawbacks I put up with all these years. First, you have to open it to get at the tools and often must close it to use them. Second, the tool lock is weak and you risk pinching a finger or worse if the tool accidentally folds on the hinge under force.
The P4 addresses both these issues quite well. I noticed right away that the wire cutter blades are replaceable, another great improvement. The serrated blade and the scissors are useful additions, too. Making the smallest screwdriver blade double as the awl point is a questionable design decision, but time will tell.
So the P4 goes onto my work belt and the old Survival Tool goes into the pickup tool box. If I never buy another Leatherman tool, it will be because the two I now have will probably be all I ever need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets the Job done
Reviewed in the United States on 19 September 2020

I have carried this daily on my belt for 6 months using it at work. The can opener is useless. You can open a can but it might take a few hours. The ruler is pointless but maybe for checking tire tread depth. The metal knife main blade displays rust fairly quickly within a week from just sweating. The pliers tighten up after squeezing something just one time and not even with much force and I gotta rock them side to side to losen them up again each time. The one handed feature does work but in order to close it one handed i gotta put a handle against my hip and push it against my body. If they fix the can opener, used better metal for the main blade and made the ruler like the wave I would buy another one. As for this model it gets the job done but has some flaws. I cant really recommend it until an updated model is manufactured.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tool with areas that could be improved

I have owned a number of Leatherman and other makes of multi-tools. This one is a good design. It is sturdy. The tools can be used by opening them from the outside. Very nice.
Gripes: It is heavy. You need suspenders to hold your belt up! Though they claim it is a one handed opening tool, doing so with either knife blade risks injury. It is not like one hand opening pocket knife. The Phillips bit is fairly large. My tasks often involve smaller size that this tool can't manage. Grinding it to a finer point would solve the issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly the coolest Leatherman...hopefully they can continue to improve on that technology.

The one handed operation is not quite there with the opening of the pliers. SOG has that down, but the satisfying magnetic click you feel and hear is so gratifying that it immediately forces you to forgive that it takes two hands to open to the pliers. It's beautifully machined, but why it doesn't carry the same grade steel as one would find on the TTi....and it's ridiculous that they go overboard with the flat head screwdrivers, yet give you one Phillips. Like the new case, too! Just remove the Leathetman tag from the case and you'll notice people trying to figure out what'S on your belt.

I've carried a Leatherman Charge+ TTI for over ten years and decided I wanted to upgrade. I am amazed by the one handed operation of the Free series. Very easy fun to use. I wish the blade was S30V and I wish the tools were better thought out, it almost feels like they gave up when designing the smaller tools.

4.0 out of 5 stars My First Leatherman! It's almost everthing I need in a EDC Multi-tool.

The Free P4 is almost perfect. I really hope there will be an update with an xacto knife and interchangeable bit driver. I also prefer the full size diamond file on the Leatherman Wave Plus. This is my first Leatherman multi-tool and happy with this choice. Especially because the magnetic closure makes this tool easy to open one handed. You can also access all the tools without opening the pliers. Closing the tools are just as easy as opening. I'm a big fan of the package opener as well as the larger sized scissors. The bit driver and package opener are the only 2 tools hard to open. Maybe those with stronger or larger thumbs it may be easier. Last thing to note, I have long nails and using this tool is a breeze.
