24 curved and 8 straight track sections are included. You can create a circle (smallest layout - approximately 49" across), a rectangle (60" x 60") or an oval layout (approximately 50" x 73"). There is enough extra room in the Gondola (the open railroad cart with the green boxes) that you could possibly insert your own small Santa figurine or elf.
The best part of the train set is that it doesn't run on electricity so you can place it on any flat surface and not have to worry about proximity to a power source. The Locomotive (the first car) contains 6 "C" batteries and the remote control contains 3 "AAA" batteries. The locomotive lights illuminate in the front and in the rear when it is powered on.
The fact that this train runs on batteries also presents some inherit problems. For starters, the batteries drain fairly quickly in the train and as they drain - the train will run slower and slower. The train also doesn't respond very quickly to commands from the hand-held remote (even when the batteries are new). If you want to change the speed or stop the train it is very slow to respond. You also have to turn off the power switch on top of the train and on the hand-held remote to preserve the battery life (neither the train nor the remote turns off automatically after a period of non-use).
The biggest limitation to this train set is that there is no music. There are 3 buttons on the remote that can be pushed for sound: Bell, Whistle and a music symbol - sadly, there is no music. When you push the music symbol, what you hear is the voice of the conductor. If the train is not moving, the conductor says "All aboard, this train is heading North." When the train is moving and the same button is pushed, the conductor says, " Next stop the North Pole."
This train will also not tolerate ANY obstructions on (or under) the track so if you plan on placing this around your Christmas tree, you will want to ensure that nothing gets too close to the track or the train will jump off of the track. There was a tiny bump in the curve of our track area and the train kept running off of the track until we carefully readjusted it. I don't think that you'd be able to place this train track on top of a tree skirt as it wouldn't be flat enough to keep the train stable on the track.
This isn't a bad train set - I just think that it's somewhat average. Having said that though - some train sets are MUCH more expensive than this basic model so all in all, you're getting a lower model train set but only spending around $100.
