Allows the barista to generate the exact same amount of tamping pressure every time IF they stop increasing downward force as soon as the spring starts to give way. If you let the handle get all the way to the bottom of it's travel, then all bets are off and this does the same thing any tamper does. Consistent tamping is critical when dialing in your grind. If your tamping pressure changes even a little, it will have significant impact on the pull and will become an unpredictable variable when you are trying to get the grind setting just right. This tamper will take that variable out of your equation, allowing you to focus solely on either dose or grind until you get things perfect. Then it will keep that tamping pressure the same so you don't lose that perfect shot you worked so hard to get. It's solidly made, polishes the puck well with a smooth flat bottom. The handle is reasonably ergonomic and feels good.
Replaced my stock tamper from Breville Barista Express and noticed the difference right away: flat even puck surface, improved flow. Though I am new to home espresso, happen to have a fairly steady hand pressure. Still, getting a calibrated one helped to improve shot to shot consistency. May get a regular one at some point in a future, as I tend to tilt it a bit when the spring is engaged and the tamper is a tad less stable vertically. But until my muscle memory is perfect, this one is the way to go for me. Haven't tried those costing upwards from $150, so don't know if there is such a difference in performance. But then, TMO, we are talking $10K car with $5K rims on it. Unless I am buying a pro espresso machine along with a pro grinder, don't think it's justified for me: likely, diminishing return for the money spent. Also, want to mention: my first tamper came with a small but fairly deep scratch at the bottom edge. Luxhaus customer service responded right away and sent me a replacement in perfect condition - no questions asked! So rest assured, they stand by their products. There is a mention re: workmanship quality of inner parts. I am a pretty picky guy, and mine two came quite well machined inside out including the hex pieces (well, with the exception of that scratch). So, maybe it was a fluke for that customer, or I got lucky... Also, the pressure on both is very consistent in 29.8-31 lbs range when the springs were engaged, but not compressed completely (bathroom scale - so, not precise or scientific). Took at least 10-15 measurements on each of them; hence, the range.
Wow, what a difference a good tamper makes. The plastic scoop/tamper that came with our Delonghi just wasn’t cutting it. One cup using the Lux-Haus tamper proved that. The amount of creme achieved was very noticeable and it is so much easier to use.
To address a few notes from older reviews. The tamper I received, did not have any engraving on the side of the tamper. This ensures the tamping is even. It does not “click” when it is done tamping but it is easy to feel when it reaches the bottom. The 51mm is the size for the Delonghi ECP3X20 Series.
The tamper itself is very sturdy and well built. It does not wobble when you press down. It is a smooth tamp and a clean release, no coffee stuck to the tamper and it easily comes up and out of the coffee holder.
I am very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality tamper.
Keeps you consistent. Perfectly flat. Made me realize how much I was over tamping previously. Also made my realize my other tamper was not perfectly flat. Needed to grind finer once I got this tamper. Once my grind was dialed in I have been getting really good consistent shots from my machine. Highly recommended.
Should also note that my item was lost when initially shipped to me. Seller quickly resolved this issue and sent me a replacement item at not extra cost. Seller - Luxhaus - gets 5 stars as well.
i received the tamper yesterday and made an espresso this morning, wow! what a difference it makes! i could see and taste the improved result instantly! the tamping was the best looking one i ever done and somehow it brought out the pleasant sweet taste i didn't know that existed before (i have been using the same coffee beans for years, but was never truly happy about it until now!)
the packaging, the thank you card, and the follow up bonus gift download were all nice little touches! i couldn't believe i hadn't purchased this sooner years ago to improve my espresso experience! the product felt totally solid right out of the box. it really is a great value for the price! I loved it!!
I looked at many other tampers before buying this one a week ago. I am glad I did. Though I was a little slowed to buy due to the price, I ultimately decided to try it. I read a lot of reviews of the cheaper ones about flaking metal, and plastic, sizing issues, etc., and I wanted something that was sturdy and long lasting. It has the right amount of heft to it that tells me that the tamper is solid steel. The handle seems sturdy enough for the job. I really like the calibration aspect because the spring "tells" me to stop tamping at the right weight. (Tip I read: hold it like a flashlight) I ordered a 51 mm and it was spot on. I have a DeLonghi machine, middle of the line, and wanted to get the most out of it. Since I am not a barista, and prior to last Christmas, I was not a daily espresso drinker either, however, I knew what taste I wanted out of it and have been trying everything to make the best (imho) espresso since it's the only coffee I have all day. It takes a lot of guess work out of it.
I have been toying with the idea of using a calibrated tamper for some time now, and after careful deliberation, I am glad I did. On my very first try, I grounded my coffee (16 grams) leveled out my double shot basket, and used the Luxe tamper . Is it a perfect 30 pounds of torque? Who cares honestly, its all about the outcome. If I can pull a perfect shot my first try, and just need to worry about the grind setting, since the amount should stay pretty consistent, then there is less variables to deal with, hence a better expresso shot every time. Id say thats worth the 30 bucks spent, in order to save from wasting coffee on bad shots.
I now look forward to my morning espresso. this is a must have if you are struggling with staying consistent with your shots... plus my husband (finally) learned how to pull an espresso shot........ amazing.
The only con is that it came with a really cute card saying that the lovey couple makes these in their garage.. yet the tamper says it’s made in China? But I didn’t deduct any stars because I only care about how well this works and if it has made my day to day life any easier. Will update if my opinion changes!
The first thing that struck me was the weight - this is a hefty device! I was blown away by how sturdy and solid this tamper is. Despite the weight, it is very easy to handle and way more ergonomic than my previous tampers. It's very comfortable and immediately became my favorite. The build in calibration takes the guess work out of getting that 30 pounds of pressure. I can't say enough about this tamper. I've used it about 4-6 times a day for the last several weeks and can't see any reason to use something else. Quality build, comfortable, easy to use and super effective. Couldn't ask for more!
Wow ! You can see and feel the quality of this product ! I recently started learning about how to make my own espresso with my own manual espresso machine. I was getting a 15 second Pull using the supplied plastic tamper. I changed nothing in the process except for this calibrated Tamper and behold, the Pull time is now 25 seconds... the resulting taste of the shot is awesome!
I'm more than pleased with this Tamper! I can't believe it's made in a garage!!!
Keep up the good work, Very,Very Impressive !!! Money well spent!!!
