This calibrated tamper works like a charm & has made a noticeable improvement in the consistency of my shots. The tamper is attractive, hefty, well-made & reasonably priced. It fits perfectly in my Gaggia Factory 106 manual lever espresso machine's 51mm single and double baskets. (The Gaggia Factory 106 was essentially a limited edition, rebadged version of the still-made and much more commonly found La Pavoni Millennium.)
BTW, with respect to the pressure accuracy issue... I can't especially vouch of my decidedly non-laboratory test methodology. Such as it was, however,it consisted of using our bathroom digital scale (with, of course a clean folded-over paper towel between the tamper and scale for sanitary purposes! ;-) ). I then pressed the tamper down on the scale just to the tamper's fully depressed position and then held it there in place until the scale readout registered, without noticeably increasing the pressure beyond that needed just to hold the tamper in place in its fully depressed position. I repeated this three times and got readings of 27.9 lbs, 33.1 lbs & 29.6 lbs, respectively. To me, those readings seem reasonably close to 30 lbs...
Wow, what a difference a good tamper makes. The plastic scoop/tamper that came with our Delonghi just wasn’t cutting it. One cup using the Lux-Haus tamper proved that. The amount of creme achieved was very noticeable and it is so much easier to use.
To address a few notes from older reviews. The tamper I received, did not have any engraving on the side of the tamper. This ensures the tamping is even. It does not “click” when it is done tamping but it is easy to feel when it reaches the bottom. The 51mm is the size for the Delonghi ECP3X20 Series.
The tamper itself is very sturdy and well built. It does not wobble when you press down. It is a smooth tamp and a clean release, no coffee stuck to the tamper and it easily comes up and out of the coffee holder.
I am very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality tamper.
I looked at many other tampers before buying this one a week ago. I am glad I did. Though I was a little slowed to buy due to the price, I ultimately decided to try it. I read a lot of reviews of the cheaper ones about flaking metal, and plastic, sizing issues, etc., and I wanted something that was sturdy and long lasting. It has the right amount of heft to it that tells me that the tamper is solid steel. The handle seems sturdy enough for the job. I really like the calibration aspect because the spring "tells" me to stop tamping at the right weight. (Tip I read: hold it like a flashlight) I ordered a 51 mm and it was spot on. I have a DeLonghi machine, middle of the line, and wanted to get the most out of it. Since I am not a barista, and prior to last Christmas, I was not a daily espresso drinker either, however, I knew what taste I wanted out of it and have been trying everything to make the best (imho) espresso since it's the only coffee I have all day. It takes a lot of guess work out of it.
Nice finish on all surfaces, good heft and comfortable to use. I appreciate the spring loaded travel of the press; it allows me to get far more consistent results than I got with the built in "press" attached to my Delonghi Espresso maker. You will see other reviews that speak in long form on issues with proper calibration of the spring action or issue with the internal works of the spring mechanism. I've had no such concerns after a few months of use. Again, its nice to use and I get consistent results. Given the price I suggest you simply give it a try, I suspect 9 out of 10 will be happy with it.
I recommend this to those looking for a cost effective calibrated tamper. I have purchased both a 51mm (Breville BES 830XL) and a 53.5mm (Breville Bambino Plus) tamper for my two Breville espresso machines and the both perform perfectly.
Finding 3rd-party accessories for the BES 830 XL is extremely difficult. Breville's spec for the portafilter basket is 50mm, but I found that is at the bottom. The top 1/2 is just a bit over at 51mm and the 51mm LuxHaus fits perfectly to a normal tamp depth of 5/8" as Breville recommends for tamped head space at the top of the basket.
The specs for the Bambino Plus state the portafilter basket is 54mm. Again, the 53mm LuxHaus fits perfectly to a normal tamp depth of 5/8" for head space at the top of the basket even when I do my finish tamp after I have trimmed it using their "Razor" tool.
These tampers a well constructed with a solid feel and are easy to grip. It would be nice if there was a tactile "click" when you hit the calibrated pressure, but I have quickly gotten the feel for using them. I measured both to be abbot 32 pounds of pressure which does exceed the recommendation for 30 lbs.; but, its consistency that counts...not the exact pressure :)
I currently have an inexpensive DeLonghi Espresso machine and even though we were getting ok results with the built in tamper sometimes we would over or under pack the puck and I wanted more consistent results. This product does exactly that. My pucks are consistently more even which has led to a more consistent, even pull and perfect crema almost every time. Usually if something goes wrong with a pull it's because I messed up and overfilled the portafilter, or didn't verify that the puck was even. Overall, I would say this is a cheap and easy way to make a big impact in the quality of your espresso.
The fit and finish is impeccable. Comes in a fitted case with a red velvet like cinch sack. But that is not what fully impressed me about this tamper. It was the customer service. I actually measured and ordered the wrong size. I messaged the vendor and received an answer the next day. Replaced the tamper for free and asked me to pass along the wrong sized to someone else who could use it. This is what customer service should be like.
I’m honestly thrilled. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference , was I ever wrong.. I used it for the first time this morning and finally got a great cup of coffee.. i was useing the light cheaper one that came with my machine and it wasn’t compacting the coffee.. great investment.
If you have an espresso machine and enjoy a good cup of coffee you definitely need this Pressure Tamper. It gives you a perfect expresso taste because the compression is uniform. The base of the Tamper doesn’t move : you just push the handle down. It is well made and ergonomic. It came in a nice box with his little velvet pouch. It seems a little expensive but so worth it ! I definitely recommend this elegant high quality product.
It is pretty hefty, wasn't expecting it really. The mechanism is very smooth and helped me make the best tasting shots that have ever come from my machine. It takes a lot guesswork out of the process which results in a fine beverage. Also A great gift for all coffee lovers.
