I've done a couple of tests. It's not taking much sound from the top. It seems to be better standing perfectly upright. There's much more front-side power than from the top. I'll have to ask my listeners to help me tune it in for lows, mids and trebs next week. Other than that, I'm very pleased I now have a mic the mixer 'likes'.
In the box: Microphone; soft mic cover; table stand; shock mount; XLR double-ended cable; spec sheet and warranty info.
Four stars because it's still good value, and good enough for lots of uses.
The included accessorys make this a good value Mike for general use.
It works well for reamping where the signal is good.
I've had good results with both bass and guitar cabs.
Pros: Good for picking up acoustic intruments and voice. Excellent for acoustic guitar for example. Clear sound, no discernible noise (well below 70dB) and good definition across the spectrum - nice bass, decent mid and fairly clear treble. Good suppression of ambient noise (e.g. PC fan is below the noise threshold), perhaps helped by cardioid curve.
Cons: The sound level is a bit low at 30cm from the mike - but this is easy to iron out with a pre-amp. Spongy thing (wind shield?) was a bit mashed in the box and you need to be very careful getting the mic into the bracket as padding seems quite easy to peel off.
Summary: You are unlikely to tell the difference between this and a much more expensive mikes. I am not bothered by the cons listed - it's better if the cost savings are on these trimmings than on the sound quality which is superb.
I'm using this on my YouTube channel - and also for some Voice-Over work that I do as part of my job and it's improved the quality of the audio considerably. I'm running it through a Behringer Xneyx 302 USB mixer (to provide the phantom power) and then into a Tascam DR-05 Audio recorder. It's mounted into a desk-mounted, extendable mic sound and clipped into it's own shock mount.
Do be aware that if you buy this, you will need to be able to power it - so you'll need a mixer or adaptor than can provide the phantom power it needs. Unlike many powered condenser mics, this will run on phantom power as low as 9 volts - so it works nicely with the output from the Xenyx 302.
The mic is one that does need +48v Phantom Power so an interface (there are some decent value ones out there, but if running windows 10. Make sure and check that there are no driver issues, but i digress) or power supply is definitely needed.
All in all very happy with the mic, and hope to use it in a number of upcoming projects
It's a nice little kit, the mic is not pro standard, but decent for the money. The antishock mount is nice but the table top tripod isn't up to much, but useful at a pinch.
Pretty pleased with this for the money spent.
