My 5-year-old daughter loves this, but it isn't entirely as advertised. The geodes are small, solid, and tough - it takes a VERY hard strike with a hammer (by an adult) to break lumps off one. There is no pretty internal cavity - just a lump of rather unexciting malformed crystals. Despite these dowmsides. my daughter loves the activity and the bits of crystal that result, so it is a wothwhile purchase - but only if the interest is already there in your child. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.
