5.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable and kept my little one busy for about 2-3 hours

My son loved this. He kept busy for a bit with it. The digging tools are not the best, but probably purposely made that way to keep them digging longer. The gems inside were nice, a tad on the small size, but for a kid they were just fine and look very nice as well (especially the tigers eye).
Bought this for our daughter's birthday and she loved it very much however, there wasn't 15 gemstones. We'll return it and we will try to buy another box 'hoping the next one will be complete'. Fingers crossed
I wasn’t going to bother writing a review, but having been asked twice I’ve decided to go ahead. I bought the gemstone kit for my grandsons 8th birthday. He loves stones in general, but is very fond of crystals. At £29.99 I anticipated something exciting , and a challenge. It was neither. All style over substance. Yes, there were 15 stones, nothing special and a doddle for this eight year old to excavate. Honestly, I would have done better buying some gemstones and organising a treasure hunt in the garden at half the cost. Very disappointing.
In our set the desert rose was missing, although it was 15 gemstones altogether. However my son was upset for that reason and we contacted Customer Service (Discover with Dr.Cool) which is just fabulous! They told us what kind of gemstones we've got, and proposed to send to us a replacement of missing desert rose or choice of a new set for free as compensation. My son is a very happy and proud owner of gemstones and fossils sets :-) Thank you!
I was slightly disappointed when me and my son sat down together to do this. I thought it was very small for the amount of money; however, my son loved it and actually, it was quite fun to dig out the gems with him. But be prepared for A LOT of mess when doing this. It comes with a booklet explaining what the gems are. My son was over the moon. Took them to school the next day and showed them to his class. And now he wants more! He said it’s one of his favourite things to do, so if he’s happy, then I’m happy! Although, there was suppose to be 15 gems and there were only 14; I literally broke apart the whole thing looking for it and it was the best one as well, so that was annoying. The geodes don’t look as nice as in the booklet, either; very small and not so sparkly or colourful. So I have mixed feelings about this.
This was a great quiet time activity for my 4 year old daughter. You get plenty of stones, and the process of excavation is as hard as I'd hoped. I had to help at times, but I'd prefer that to it being easy and done with. A few of the crystals were a bit 'meh' but others were bigger and better than expected so we didn't mind. We did also use a metal tool at times as the plastic one that comes with is okay, but having something stronger helped when she was struggling to find the next stone.
