From the manufacturer
Spice Mill - Velvet Black
The Spice Mill is a sleek all-black handheld spice grinder for grating nutmeg and cinnamon. This chef's tool replaces the Microplane grate and shake, a previous whole spice grinder. Use this kitchen tool to grind fresh hard spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. Since it is manual grater you can control the amount of pressure while twisting the top to create exactly the type of ground results you want. In addition, it has storage for your whole spices in the top of the plunger.
- Grinding whole spices optimizes flavor by retaining the natural oils.
- Comfortable to hold it has a top of the line velvet finish for a luxury grip.
- Simple to clean as there are very few parts to assemble or disassemble.
The Microplane Spice Mill is designed for professional chefs and home cooks who use fresh ground spices in recipes
The Spice Mill is elegant with a discrete storage container on the top. Simply unscrew the top of the plunger to reveal the storage compartment. This storage area is large enough for several whole nutmegs and sticks of cinnamon. Keep those whole spices within reach for whenever you want to grind your favorite spices.
Great for hard spices
Enjoy the benefits of hard spices like cinnamon and nutmeg on your favorite holiday cooking and baking recipes. Did you know that grinding fresh spices optimizes the flavor? Highly volatile oils make nutmeg taste best when you grate it freshly into a dish.
Personalized grind texture
Microplane's Spice Mill lets you choose what amount of texture you want. With the manual control, you can press the plunger harder or softer to change the amount of spice that touches the blade to get your perfect grind. Each blade has 128 teeth, and each blade is made in the USA. These teeth are razor sharp but are safely installed where your fingers won't get in the way.

There is a storage area in the lid, which just pulls off. There is also a bottom cover which fits on easily and stays put well.
One point to note is that you will need to remove the spice that you have been grating and place it in the top storage part when finished, as the grinder will not close completely if the spice is left in the bottom area. I do not find this an issue as it is so quick to simply take out the spice and place in the bottom area before each use.
I would highly recommend and might gift too if any of my friends are as nutmeg mad as I am.
That said, I was moderately impressed by the build and quality. It's a decent size, nicely manufactured, has a nice feel in the hand, and doesn't appear to be a Chinese knock-off (a risk these days when buying from Amazon). Generally, for spices, I imagine it's a decently good grinder.
Snags? Well, it might be awkward to clean - it doesn't seem that the metal cutting plate is removable so cleaning the insides could be awkward. Also, when grinding, the unit *is not sealed* - so if you tilt the grinder while using it, some of the unground spices/peppers/whatever can spill out from around the edges of the plunger, which is a bit disappointing.
