My first impressions were “wow”, the photography is great and there are quick and easy, fresh and light recipes within each category, which I especially like because I am cutting down on sugar. I thoroughly recommend this book.

This is a great collection of recipes. Some unusual ingredients are used in some recipes but these are easy to find in health food shops. Photography is inspiring. Nice collection of quick recipes also included.

Fantastic Baking book with a difference.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2018Verified Purchase
Fantastic baking book, clear instructions with beautiful illustrations. I like the fact that the majority of ingredients are normal everyday store cupboard essentials for a baker. At last some different recipes that turn out as expected. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys baking no matter what level of experience baking there is something for everyone to try.

Over-use of Dates and Coconut Products
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 November 2018Verified Purchase
I purchased this book after seeing several of the recipes in a food magazine, none of which used dates or coconut. Much to my disappointment, however, many of the recipes in the book do contain dates and/or coconut products. Sadly, this means that Modern Baking is an unwelcome addition to my baking library, as I cannot bear dates and my other half is coconut intolerant. An expensive mistake unfortunately.
It would have been helpful if Donna Hay had listed possible substitutes for dates, coconut oil etc. as I know I am not the only person unable to cook with these ingredients!

Gorgeous recipes
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2018Verified Purchase
This is a gorgeous book. I do like Donna Hay and her recipes. When I visit my daughter in Australia I always make sure I buy her monthly magazine that is issued over there as it is just full of the most lovely stuff.
The first section in this book is Chocolate and I just drooled over the pages - chocolate and maple banana cake, white chocolate and amaretti cake. Fig and chocolate truffles (I am making these for Christmas) there are so many imaginative recipes and the instructions are simple and uncomplicated and accompanied by beautiful photographs.
There are quick and easy recipes here as well and the feeling is that this is a book which can be used by most competant bakers and cooks. It is not high brow or pretentious in any way. All recipes are, as in all cook books these days, given in metric and no imperial measures and I always find this sightly irritating. But that is my only criticism of a beautiful book. I dislike the word ‘accessible’ as i think it is over used but everything in this book is.
A treat to read even if you never cook anything from it!

Donna Hay’s latest book is packed with ideas.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 November 2018Verified Purchase
I have nearly all Donna Hay’s books and really like her recipes, the design and photography makes them appealing. This a substantial volume with many recipes but I feel it has too many chocolate ones! I know most love chocolate but would have preferred less plus they are printed on a dark background which makes them hard to read.

Limited instructions and many variations of the same desserts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2020Verified Purchase
If you are used to detailed cooking books then avoid this. Sure it has pages and pages of beautiful pictures and multiple variations of the same cake but the instructions are shameful. 5 lines of the most basic instructions...such a shame.
