2.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop caraousel of lunacy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2021
I don’t tend to write reviews. The sort of people that buy a spatula and think “hmm. Very adequate, better tell the Internet” baffle me.

However, trying to use this baby monitor was such a carousel of lunacy I felt obliged to try and dissuade fellow new parents from wasting their time with it.

Long story short: this has been designed and built by the sort of keen and prying minds you’d expect to find in premiership football.

The first warning sign comes 15 seconds after turning on the camera. The voice of a woman in a thick Chinese accent plays: “Sys-tem start-ing up”.

Imagine the scene. You've placed your sleeping infant into their cot with the sort of gentleness usually reserved for bomb defusing and dusting of Fabergé eggs. You’ve switched on the baby monitor and are tiptoeing out as though you’re Anne Frank: what is the last thing you might want to hear? Oh, I dunno, maybe A COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY RECORDING OF A STRANGER’S VOICE.

Perhaps you can see past this wrinkle, or think it’s a fair trade off for some of the other innovative features the product boasts. Well, let me tell you about some of those...

The inbuilt temperature monitoring is doubtless an important addition. Overheating in infants can have tragic consequences and so getting their sleeping environment right is a weighty responsibility.

So, enabling the temperature warning alarm will be the first thing to do, then? Well, it would be if the warning range wasn’t as fixed as the smile of anyone that’s ever co-hosted with Piers Morgan.

And, more to the point, fixed at the ludicrous range of 18 to 30 degrees. 18, at least, is a reasonable lower value, but 30 degrees? An alarm at 30 degrees might as well be the pinging sound of an email with tips for how to explain your catastrophic failure as a caregiver at the inquest.

Talking of alarms, you might want to enable the ‘Sound Alarm' feature. Here’s how the product page describes it:

“when the baby is crying, the screen will automatically wake up and notify the parents, you can calm the baby on the camera side, usually when you leave the room busy, you can have a conversation with the baby.”

Leaving aside the charming notion that this magical baby monitor will imbue not only the power of speech but the art of conversation, you might notice the suggestion that you’ll need to leave the “room busy” to be able to hear.

This is good advice. If the room busy in which you are in is busy with a ticking watch or perhaps a ladybird crawling across a leaf then this will be absolutely deafening compared to the speaker output of the monitor.

It does score some volume points, though. When the alarm sounds to notify you to leave the room busy, it does so at the sort of farcical volume that’ll cause your neighbours to check why their smoke alarms are ringing.

Perhaps you’re still not put off. Perhaps your new-born inherited your congenital deafness and the video performance is all the matters.

If that’s the case then I have good news! Bad news too, but let’s do the good news first: the video performance is great. The colours are vivid and the image is crisp.

The bad news is none of that applies once the camera switches into night mode. Call me a dogged traditionalist, but at night is when I’d hoped to use it the most.

In night mode, the entire picture is painted in about three shades of grey. There are pictures of UFOs, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster rendered in better detail.
There is a photo of what to can see at night attached to the review so you can see what I mean.

Poking about the menu you might think you’ve come across a solution when you find the familiar icons for altering the contrast with the corresponding plus and minus signs.

Alas, you have been trolled. Those buttons adjust the brightness. This is the sort of maddening inconsistency that would drive a lesser man to murder.

Perhaps you’re still not put off. Perhaps three shades of grey is all you need so long as you can get a nice close up of your baby’s face.

Enter the zoom feature. The product page says “CHWRAES baby monitor features 2X and 4X zoom”.

Firstly, it shouldn’t escape your notice that the manufacturer name printed on it reads “CHWARES” – that’s right, of all the things you’d have thought they might have got right it’d be the spelling of their own name. Apparently, not so.

Secondly, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the same attention to detail has gone into the implementation of the zoom feature.

Let’s say you’ve done something eminently sensible like place the camera on a nearby chest of drawers, pointing down so that the cot mattress is at the bottom of the field of view.

Pressing the zoom button makes the middle of the picture bigger. That’s it. The baby disappears from view and you’re now enjoying a close-up of the wall of the cot. There’s no way to pan around the zoomed picture.

I would love to meet whomever produced this asinine feature design. Was it sheer literal-mindedness? Were they going through a messy divorce? Or perhaps they were just preoccupied planning their tenth birthday.

I could write much more. I could write about the manual that has all the internal consistency of a Kafka novel, the non-standard charging arrangements, the need to re-pair it every time you accidentally exit camera mode, the inability to fully power it off, the laughable claim that it’s secure and so on and so on.

However, if you’ve got this far and are still thinking “oh, but it has 5-star reviews that are marked ‘customer review of free product' which is in no way suspicious” then I’m probably not going to convince you. I’m fact, I have a question: would you like to buy some magic beans?

If you turn off video on the display the sounds doesn’t come. So I have to sleep with bright monitor next to me to be able listen to my baby.
The button to turn on/off the monitor is working 1 time from 10 tries:(.
