I’ve been apprehensive of a mandolin besides cutting my fingers off they seemed like a gadget. I can cut vegetables fruit whatever the same thickness fast. I can julienne in a few seconds I thought.
This thing comes along and wow. Does everything. Killer holder for holding the medium bring sliced. It stands up orvsits on a bowel. A ton of different slicing grating inserts. Adjustable from 1-9mm oh man. Fell in love.
I use it for root veggie fries (julienne). Fruit for crepes (so thin, grating cheese, zesting, and not grating my finger tips.
It’s one of those items you think is a waste until you use it!! Like my stand mixer/ you think meh- don’t need that silly tool. WRONG it saves time makes life easier and safer.
My only complaint and it’s a dumb one because I’m obsessed with organizing and storage. Is that even though the blade inserts have a sexy box for the ones not being used you still have one in the machine and you have to get an odd fitting storage tote for it a 7 quart plastic bin is perfect but a very very small price to pay for a tool that makes quick work of many tasks.
You won’t regret. Plus made in Austria!!
I shopped around online very carefully for a few months. Finally I ordered the Müeller VPro from amazon.com. Without any complication this thing simply adjusted to the correct thickness and sliced with perfection. I slice through the whole apple not even worrying about the seeds. To be able to reproduce with reasonable similarity the gourmet apple chips of a small shop whenever I want brings me great satisfaction. This slicer was critical to whole thing. Thanks for making a great product!
When I just got the box, I almost wanted to send it back right away. But when I took the product out of the beaten box, the product looked okay. So I thought I would like to try it anyway. And I did. The mandoline worked very well, the material was very smooth and sturdy. I used it to cut some nice apple chips. I do appreciate how easy it is to operate and clean the mandoline. Thank you for the wonderful product which survived the irresponsible mailing process and gave me a happy surprise in the end.
The cons: The blade doesn't have a guard and you must exercise care. The julienne blades also need to be clean if used and they are ultra sharp and part of the slicer itself. The holder for the vegetables fits more something round so I had to move the celery back and forth myself. Again with extra care not to cut myself.
I would recommend this product.
I was looking for a Mandolin slicer that would last, and I found it! This slicer is made of thick heavy duty plastic, cleans easy, and hasn't warped over the last several months even with dishwasher cleaning. Super sharp blades store neatly in a plastic case, and the slicer body collapses for easy storage. This is a huge advantage over other slicers! A variety of blades are included which will cut any vegetable or fruit any way you want it. The adjustable knob makes it easy to get the perfect thickness. Each 'click' makes a difference of about 1mm, so you can be very exact with cuts. I use this most often to thin slice apples to make baked apple chips or thin slice tomatoes for homemade pizza, but I've used it for many other things. No decease in performance after several months of use, and the blades are still razor sharp. In fact, the blades are so sharp that it can be tempting to use the slicer without the hand guard. Don't do it. Save yourself (and your fingers) a trip to Urgent Care.
to change to several slice sizes just right there with the twist of a knob. I didn't realize that it had the julienne slicer but that seems really
handy. I like that the mandoline is sturdy and safe with the food holder that latches on. I like that the extra blades come in the plastic box that they do. My only ding is that it is rather bulky and I'm not sure where in my kitchen to store it.
I tried slicing a potato, it was hard to make the potato slide against the blade (lots of pressure required) but got it to work, then the last piece (when most of the potato was already sliced) always got stuck in the blade. In trying to get that slice out (and slice it just with a knife) I got a deep cut in my thumb.
My husband then went for a try at it, this time with an onion. Same result. It was too hard to make the onion slide against the blade, despite trying different degrees of pressure and the onion always got stuck with the last piece.
We decided it is not a good fit for us as it is too difficult to operate and the pressure and strength needed increases the risk of getting hurt (which I did). Not sure if all mandolines are the same, as this was our first one, but we will just go back to a good old knife, much safer to use.
I'm going back to my rusty old tool that I spent two dollars with... At least I can get the job done. Total disappointment. And you know what? I bet I'll receive a letter from customer service, offering to refund me the cost and then either hint or blatantly ask me to remove my bad review. That's how a rating of ~5 stars is born, my fellow shoppers. Please, at best you can, resist the temptation, and keep your integrity and the honest reviews.
The hole in the handle/grip that you stick the food in to secure it for slicing, is small, so it would work better with small apples/food. Sometimes the food gets caught in the blade as you slide it though, so you have to slide it back a forth a few times, which can cause the metal prongs meant to hold the food in place to tear the food apart. However, if you use produce small enough to fit into the handle grip, this shouldn't be a problem.
Pros: Sharp blades, quite a few different blade options, which will give you a few different styles of slices to choose from, and a nice plastic case to store the extra blades in.
Cons: Unless the food item is small enough to fit inside the center handle hole- most of the apples/potatoes i used were too big- it can have a hard time properly holding on to bigger food items as you slide it. Bigger circumfrance food items cause the slider rails to free float as you slide the produce back and forth until it gets low enough to connect, and the metal prongs that should grip the food don't extend far enough to properly grip the bigger food in place, which can be dangerous & cause the food to tear or be damaged. A bigger hole for the food to fit in would allow for more control & ease of use.
Overall: A well made product that would be efficient for smaller food items.
The extra blades come in a storage box which allows all of the blades to be stored away from the unit (which is great when it is store high on a shelf). My only caution would be that you need to pay close attention to the dials, in that the closest dial to the large blade actually engages the cross cut blades that spin from the bottom, which is a problem if you are holding the unit from the side with your finger/thumb on top. The dial in the rear is actually the adjustment dial for the large v-blade. I am sure this would be adequately covered in the directions, but like most probably do, we got it out of the box and started playing with it (we got lucky and didn't cut ourselves, but only by luck). That isn't a critique, other than to read the instructions first.
The v-slicer makes SO much difference!
