I make a lot of salads so I find the preparation gets a bit laborious. This is a great device for taking away some of the monotony of slicing vegetables and the range of 'shapes' that you can cut makes for a more attractive salad.
What I enjoy about it is the simplicity of exchanging blades to get different types of slicing and dicing as well. Very convenient. They snap in and out well leaving me feeling safe to proceed with slicing. I like how well it fits over a bowl and over its own bottom portion to catch the veggies. And l’m grateful and like the safety feature in the slicer “handle” itself. It doesn’t take up much space at all and is easy to store. It stores within itself and creates a straight/level surface, making it all the more easily stored.
The areas I struggle with and the reasons I gave it less than five stars are the following:
- The primary slicer isn’t even with the outer area of the mandolin. What happened is that when I sliced cucumber, the edge of the spacer in which the blade is snapped into was sitting higher than the blade itself resulting in a quick hard stop of each slice attempt.
- The top protector didn’t do so well with a cucumber. Only when it was super short did it work, which was nice for when getting that close to the blade. That is a positive.
- The other disappointment for me was that the slicer didn’t have varying sizes. It was just one slice width. It would be nice to have the option for varying widths of slices for the veggies. Sometimes I enjoy slicing super thin slices of onion and cucumber.
I got this for my wife who had mentioned needing something more convenient than the big food processor. We've used it for a week or so to help prepare several meals. Overall, she likes it - it is easy to use, and easy to clean, and she likes how compact and convenient it is - both to use and to store. Her first negative was that it doesn't dice - I know, that's not what it is designed to do so I didn't take any points from it for that. Where it did lose a star was for the following: We noticed that as the blades were removed from the storage slots and placed back in them, they started to get loose and no longer lock in at times. You also have to store it with one blade installed in the slicer body, we would have preferred an additional slot even though it does have a cover. Finally, it didn't do well with frozen peppers - but that was also her first attempt at using it so we don't know if it was her or because the peppers were frozen. We haven't had a chance to try with fresh peppers to see if that makes a difference or not. All in all, it's a good product with only a couple of minor complaints.
I got this to replace a v slicer that has worked wonderfully for around 15 years. I tried to make a salad and it had trouble cutting a cucumber. Tried a radish. That worked but left a big chunk that it didn't cut. Tried some red and yellow mini peppers. They kind of worked but left a lot uncut. May have to return this and get another old faithful. Also with the storing of the blades, you have to remove them all before you use it or you will be washing them all. My other v slicer still works but no longer looks good and the guard has kind of fallen apart.
I purchased this because I always wanted to try a mandoline, but never was brave enough to try one. This one looked well made, and easy to use. And, at less than 20 bucks, it wasn't much of a commitment.
It arrived a few weeks ago and I've used it several times to make potato chips, sweet potato chips, zucchini chips, and cucumber chips. It works so well, and the chips have been so tasty baked in the oven that we haven't used any attachments beyond the plain and ridged chip slicer!
It's a very well made item. The various blade sets lock safely inside the body of the tool itself when not in use, and the guard/guide is also well made and easy to use while keeping yourself safe. The bin makes it very convienent to use, but if you have a big job to do, a series of notches has been built in to the body of the tool so that you can place it safely over the rim of a bowl so that you can slice much more than you could with the regular bottom attachment.
Overall, I love this, and I'm glad I bought it. It's quite well made, and together with how well their vacuum food preserver works, I won't hesitate to try anything else from Mueller in the future!
