An absolutely brilliant standalone police procedural. DI Jackson and his team are brilliant in this serial killer case, equally as good as DI Nicky Galeno, her other detective. Joy Ellis is an outstanding new author, and I hope she considers keeping DI Jackson going, along with her Galeno series. I hope like the great Anne Perry, she can keep the two characters going in separate series. A major new talent she definitely is. Keep it up Joy.

It is not often that I have read a book full of such suspense. I had to stop myself from letting my eyes stray too forward to see what would happen... Such suspense. So may twits and turns. First time I have read this author .... Won't be my last! Lots of great characters and unbelievable story line. Kept thinking I had it worked out, and then something new would come onto the scene. Definitely a must read!

The story tumbled along at a good pace and it wasn't obvious from the start who done it, so a cut above many crime stories. However, the plot did depend on a pretty huge coincidence, which is disappointing. The worst thing for me, though, was the writing. Ellis writes in a style that I've come to associate with Mills and Boon romances -- a little clumsy, a little forced --- especially the dialogue -- and not well suited to writing action scenes. Perhaps worse still, she is very much better at writing the female characters than the male. The asymmetry kept taking me out of the flow of the story. So, not the worst crime story I've read but far from the best. If the writing style doesn't bother you, I'm sure you would enjoy it.

I have read all of the Nicki Galena series by Ellis, and now the first two books of the Jackman and Evan series. These are equally good. The writing of Ellis provides an effective balance between plot and characterisation. I liked having a female detective who is confident and rides a motorbike, even though she lost her own husband in a motorbike accident. DI Jackman with his calm demeanour is an attractive foil to the more headstrong character of DS Evans. The plot held my attention from start to finish, and the enigmatic past and mystery of the life of the main suspect, Daniel Kinder, added extra intensity to the plot. I also enjoy the Fen country setting, as it is not a part of England always praised, but has its own haunting beauty.

Great story, lived up to my expectations full of twists didn't pick the killer until later in story. I also enjoyed the characters which were created for the story. I have enjoyed quite a few books by Joy Ellis in particular the Fens series, I look forward to reading others. I enjoy my Kindle I find it much easier to read than a hard or soft cover book. Thanks to Amazon there is always a wide range of cheaper thrillers.

Ellis has once more produced a suspense filled crime cliff hanger with the mysterious "who done it" not being revealed until towards the end.
Enjoyed the character revelations as the story develops.

Gripping mystery which had a plausible reason for keeping "the murderer's son" in the frame. The killer was amongst my list of suspects, but I wasn't totally sure until about 3/4 of the way through.

Well that came as a surprise!

I've read several of the DI Nikki Galena books and they're excellent. This is just as good with the person 'whodunnit' a complete surprise. This one has a new partnership, Jackman and Evans. A new straight from Uni type male DI and an older female DS. She's a motor bike riding widow, and he's scared of their computer whizz woman who works in the basement.
A plot different to most I've read, but it kept me reading until the wee small hours. There were a few additional twists that although seemingly didn't really mean much, actually contributed to the plot more than realised.
Joy Ellis obviously knows police work inside out and the area in and around the Fens very well. This goes to make excellent stories and well worth reading.

A gripping murder mystery.

The story starts in the Lincolnshire Fens with a double murder in 1993. In September 2015 at Fenland Constabulary Headquarters D.S. Marie Evans and her boss, D.I. Rowan Jackman investigate a vicious murder. I felt the plot line of this mystery was very well written, with lots of twists and turns and I found the book very hard to put down. I look forward to reading more books featuring Evans and Jackman.

3.5/5
I listened to an audio version of the book by the same author, from the same series, and although it's still a mystery, why Audible decided to do audiobook from book 2, not the book 1, I kind of liked it.
There were some issues with the plot and characters yes, but I love a classic police crime thrillers so I decided to try to read an actual book.
The idea behind the story was really good, however the execution was not as good as I expected. There were twists and the story ended not how I’d expected it to end, but the writing was not good. And I faced the same issues as with other book by the - redundant characters, unnecessary details and backstories which did not add anything to the story, except shifting attention from what was actually important.
So for me, it’s rather 3.5, but I’ve rounded it up. I will try the last book from the series and it that one does not stand up to my expectations, I will not read anymore books by the same author.

High school writing - appalling

If I could have given this no stars, I would. Probably the worst book I've ever read. I don't understand the rave reviews. The plot was dull (well, I only read about a quarter before deciding that life is too short), the characters two-dimensional and stilted, and the sentiments very suspect (the DI is apparently scared of anyone with mental health issues - so this is a quarter of the population, then - and why would an anorexic teenager terrify him so??).
The very worst kind of writing. To think that trees were wasted to make the paper to publish this tripe.

This is the 1st book in the DI Jackman and DS Evans series by author Joy Ellis.
'The Murderer’s Son' is my first read of a Joy Ellis book and was a fairly decent read. Not a classic but enough promise to give her writing another read. A police procedural crime novel where a brutal serial killer is on the loose in Fensland, England. The book starts with a flashback when twenty years ago a local farmer and his wife were brutally stabbed to death. French woman Francois Thayer was convicted of the murders and subsequently died. Now in present day Allison Fleet is found murdered in her own kitchen, brutally stabbed. Following the death Daniel Kinder walks into police station and confesses to the murder.
I enjoyed the main two characters and expect them to get better in coming books when further information is shared. A decent start to the series and a fair read.
