Review this product
Top international reviews
I like this product, but it's tough to justify the price. I've been desperately searching for more info on why its cost is in the clouds. It has no parabens, no sulfates, and no other added irritants, sure... but so do Kirkland shampoos and conditioners for a fraction of the cost. I mean, Kirkland is the cheapest version I can think of, but there are plenty of non-sulfate/non-paraben alternatives out there.
•• Shampoo/Conditioner History ••
I've used a ton of shampoos/conditioners in the past two years: mostly through Amazon testing. I paired this Oribe volume shampoo with their Gold Lust conditioner, which is supposed to be the creme de la creme. The combo leaves my hair feeling quite soft, and the smells are mild and pleasant (I'm sensitive to scents), but so many cheaper products have left me feeling comparable. Heck, even Nexxus's Babasu Oil conditioner at $12 a bottle leaves my hair feeling soft or softer; although, admittedly, it has low levels of sulfates, making it a rough comparison.
•• Volumizing ••
Let's talk volume. I have a short men's fade, and my wife has a pixie cut. Not a ton of hair between the two of us. I've been using it for a month straight - my wife uses it off and on. She has straight black asian hair, and I have very fine, sandy blonde. Neither of us would consider our hair to have been massively "volumized," but again, I'll fully admit that I may be the wrong hair type to receive the maximum benefit from this product.
•• Smell ••
It smells like a mix between mild fruit extracts and a rich, wood lacquer. Not my favourite scent, but some have described it as "decadent," and "this must be what rich people smell like." The last one's a bit creepy, though not necessarily wrong.
•• Amount of Shampoo ••
$47 for 250ml doesn't feel good, no matter how I cut it. If we were talking 435ml, comparable to most brands out there, I'd be more inclined to consider this a decent value.
•• Conclusion ••
I don't feel strongly about this product one way or the other. It has no parabens or sulfates, yup, but as I covered earlier, so do many competitors at a much more reasonable price. In one month's use, I don't feel like it added volume in a distinctive manner. It smells nice, but that smell can be equated to burning money for some. There isn't a ton of product for what you're paying. Overall, it's... fine. It just doesn't do enough to stand out from the myriad other products on the market.

Recommendation: Consider less expensive products that perform as well

Normally I use mousse and blowdry my hair to add volume, but this shampoo doesn't require me to use other products in conjunction with it!
Only a small amount is required to provide a nice thick suds action on my hair. I really feel like it's getting deep into my hair. It rinses out surprisingly quickly, leaving my hair feeling like thick straw before I condition it.
After towel drying, I am able to just brush my hair, leave it to air dry, and within an hour, it actually has more volume. I don't know how, but it does!
Even today - I went to work for a few hours, put a hoodie over my head as I have a migraine, and even after taking the hoodie off, my co-worker said my hair looked amazing. She was serious!
If you want to give your hair a special treat, and it really is thin and lanky, just do it!
PRICE: Too expensive. $47 for 250ml (while I am writing this review) makes this a very expensive shampoo. So, not everyone could afford to buy this. It is definitely out of reach for our household.
PERFORMANCE: It works great. Produces a decent lather and washes off quite cleanly. It leaves behind a moisturizing effect on our hair. It has a decent smell but not strong enough to bother our senses. After using it for over a week, I do get the feeling that my hair feels slightly thicker than before, but I think that is more due to the moisturizing effect. I don't believe that the shampoo made my hair thicker in a week. Still, it smells great, lathers and washes off quite nicely, and leaves a good moisturizing effect. Which makes this a great shampoo.
BOTTOM LINE: While this is a great shampoo and does work excellent, it is a bit too expensive for my household's budget given the small size. But, if you have the money to spend on a great shampoo, this one is a good choice.
It does give great volume, this is actually one of the few products from this brand that I think is worth the expensive price tag.
A tiny bit of this shampoo is enough for my thick shoulder length hair. It smells absolutely lovely, excellent volume.
I think this is the shampoo I would have used on my wedding day if I knew about it LOL. Its just one of those extravagant things that I would splurge on once every 5 years and use it on anniversaries.
Overall, this is an EXCELLENT shampoo for fine, thinning hair. I haven't actually used this product on my hair (and Im not sure I would ever try this particular volumizing one, thanks to having a giant crop of gingery wire). I got this volumizing one, and the "Daily care" shampoo, along with the hair moulding paste for my guy, who has very fine, thinning hair with a receding hairline starting on his temples. He's been using these Oribe hair products for the last couple weeks now, and honestly, his hair looks so good. He is a consultant, and now with his 31st birthday around the corner, and his hair getting thinner, I thought this might be a nice upgrade from his normal preference to the standard drugstore brands he likes to buy.
He's indicated that it lathers and washes well, and rinses cleanly out of his hair without leaving any weird residues. The smell is great - this is a great unisex shampoo scent, with a really pleasant and not overwhelming perfume to it, not overly musky, fruity, or flowery. A very small amount is needed for him to be comfortable with the amount of lather, so (thankfully) it should last awhile, given that the bottle is so small. The bottle itself is also nicely designed, and has a good "click" on the depressor to open and close, so it's easy to tell its been closed all the way (also important because at this price, I wouldnt want to accidently knock it over and spill it in the shower)
This honestly gives him softer, smoother, shinier hair, and the volumizing description actually is real (something I almost never see results of in all the volumizing products Ive gotten for him) and he has noticable lift and bounce in his short, slightly wavy hair. In a week straight of using this one after using the daily care shampoo from Oribe, I noticed that this leaves my guy with a little bit more lift and bounce to his hair, without curling or frizzing, versus the daily care which seems to accentuate a bit more of his natural wave. Otherwise, he has indicated that these are about the same in terms of scent, washing power, etc.
He doesn't use conditioner, and so it's good that this shampoo doesn't strip the bejeesus out of his hair and scalp, and doesn't leave his hair frizzy.
Overall, I am actually impressed with this hair product line. I do kind of feel like these are something I'd see displayed on like, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, because holey cheese these are so expensive, but I guess the $50 shampoo (at least in this case) is legitimately much more impressive and nicer on hair than the $5 bottle, and it isn't just all hype for a fancy schmancy name brand.
I might buy him this haircare line for his Christmas presents from now on- particularly this volume version of this line- given that they honestly make his hair look really great, and I think it helps give him a bit more to his presentation when he's meeting with clients. Honestly, if having nice hair is important to you (or your partner) then this may actually be worth the cost.
Overall, giving this one a full 5 stars in spite of the fact that I'm still balking at the price, because it really is a volumizing shampoo, and I honestly notice a big difference in my guy's hair from him using this and the Oribe styling paste compared to his regular shampoo and styling paste.
