'As always, even Robotham's most extraordinary stories have their basis in the kinds of things people really do. . . At its heart, The Other Wife is all about what it means to be a father. It's also a book about coming to terms with the past in ways that allow us to move on' (The Age)

‘The Other Wife’ is fascinating and gripping from the start. The more Joe investigates the further his seemingly perfect parents fall from grace. The twists are unpredictable and saw me reading long into the night.
Joe is swept along on a shocking trail of family secrets and intrigue that will shake him to his very core.
I also loved that the book wasn't entirely focused on the investigation you experienced Joe's personal struggles as he tried to balance finding out the truth as well as keeping himself and his daughters safe. Shamefully this is the first Robotham book I've read but it certainly won't be the last.
A fantastic 5 star read that I highly recommend to all.
I love Joe and Ruiz, and I love this author's plots and his writing. My only issue with Joe as a character is that I'm starting to find myself looking at his Parkinsons' illness over the timeline progression of 9 books, and I just wonder how he is able to physically do some of the things he does in tight situations and tight spots and come out on top. However, I absolutely admit to not being a full bottle on this disease and so perhaps there are no dramas with Joe achieving the things he does.
He is, he says, closer to 60 than 50, very much your white collar bloke, and he manages to do things with his hands tied, having just been knocked out for the count, that do make me wonder sometimes. Ruiz - I don't have the problem with his age and the physical presence he always has in these stories. He's an ex Rugby player and an ex cop, a big bloke, and doesn't mind breaking rules.
The other part of me doesn't ask questions about middle-aged blokes beating the bejesus out of younger, nastier folk, and just cheers Joe and Ruiz on whilst enjoying the ride.
I do love Joe and Ruiz.
This is my favourite of the Joe O’Loughlin novels, which is as much about the complexities of parent-child relationships, family relationships and friendships as it is about who tried to kill an eminent surgeon. And it is also a novel about acceptance and forgiveness. Who can really be blamed for the child who is left severely disabled after an emergency caesarean operation? Or the death of Joe’s wife after an operative procedure? Or mental illness? Or Joe’s Parkinson disease? Or even attempted murder?
These things happen and eventually Joe realises all we can do is keep living and look for enjoyment in the life we have.
The Other Wife kept my interest right to the end and left me feeling disappointed that the book had finished. Keep up the good work Michael Rowbotham.
Top reviews from other countries

we have a protagonist who is a psychologist with flashes of Sherlock Holmes for mundane stuff but don’t actually help him solve a crime, oh and he has Parkinson’s although it seems to cause twitches rather than tremors in his hands so I suspect a wrong diagnosis. The other wife is the focus for half the book and the dropped almost comically with all of her dark secrets irrelevant. These books always end badly and with this one our tortured (forgot to say the love of his life died last year), flawed hero randomly goes without backup or protection to the house of the killer and..wait for it...rings the bell. When no one answers he pops round the back to see the killer at that precise moment and 20 odd days after the (attempted) murder burning the evidence. 😬only read to the end as it was for my Book Club.

Joe, expert psychologist, is grieving the loss of his wife. He’s sold the family home and moved with his two daughters to London. What happens next is the stuff of family nightmares. His father, William, has had a very serious accident causing catastrophic head injuries. The nightmare worsens. Whilst trying to ascertain exactly what has happened, it is discovered that William has a second wife and family. William, the renowned , straight-laced, upstanding surgeon and strict father appears to be the complete opposite -a negligent, drug taking, womaniser who has spun countless lies and stolen foundation money.
Gripping and engrossing. One minute I didn’t believe William to be this ‘other’ person. The next minute evidence indicated that he was. All kinds of twists are revealed and what appears to be an accident slowly evolves into a deliberate act to injure William. The question is why?
So much here to keep interest and thoughts at full tilt; the revelations continue at virtually the turn of every page.
Take note of the higher reviews. They are correct. Highly recommended.

The lead character Joe O’Loughlin is a clinical psychologist suffering with Parkinson’s disease. Joe’s wife Julianne died suddenly over a year ago after complications while having a routine operation, leaving him to care for his daughter Charlie and younger daughter Emma.
This book starts with Joe receiving an urgent call informing him that his father has been attacked and is in intensive care, so he rushes to be by his mother’s side. When he arrives at the hospital he finds his father in a coma and an unknown woman at his side, who claims to be his father William’s other wife. After having the woman named Olivia Blackmore removed from the hospital, he begins to investigate her claims and discovers she is telling the truth. His father’s life was a sham and has been living a lie. With the help of his trusted friend Vincent Ruiz, Joe tries to uncover more of his father secret life and who would wish him dead.
This is another well written novel by Michael Robotham and there are a few hints in this book that the series maybe coming to an end, I hope not. Well planned plots with strong believable characters and make entertaining reading.
