The box is solid and well made, unlike some other flimsier releases. Each disc is packaged in a neat, well made little replica LP cover with the name on the spine. A decent booklet accompanies the release.
The music here is classic stuff and I was particularly taken with Brubeck, Weather Report and Nina Simone - every time I hear 'Backlash Blues', I melt - pure bliss.
The whole package is a gem full of delights from beginning to end.
This collection has so much to recommend it. Just marvellous!
How do you encapsulate a hugely diverse genre as Jazz in just 25 cds? I suppose you pick your 25 "names" who most represent Jazz as a whole and feature one of their albums, which is exactly this box set does and it does it fantastically well. A lot of thought seems to have gone in to selecting the albums.
Musically, there's very little to dislike about this collection and a hell of a lot to love. Beautifully presented and although you may not like everything, at a little over a quid an album, it represents amazing value. That is the point of a sampler after all, dip in, find what you like and develop your tastes from there. If you are new to Jazz, I can't recommend this box set highly enough
Can't wait to get the second collection.
