I don’t like to use anything non-edible on my cakes so I have never used plastic or cardboard toppers, but I was excited when I found this.
Sadly it was not anywhere near as simple as the demo video suggests. I tried several times, wasting 4 little packs of modelling paste in the process, not to mention an entire evening JUST trying to make a successful topper.
The design is too intricate. There were several delicate points that just would not release from the cutter no matter what I tried, so the whole topper stretched and snapped at the weak points each time just trying to get it out of the cutter. I tried several times using different methods and the same parts always stuck. There are some parts where even the smallest of craft brushes won’t fit in the gap to push it through from the other side.
I gave up in the end after wasting the cost of the cutter itself, about £10 worth of modelling paste, and several hours of my life and had to re-think my design.
In the end I snapped off the spikes and used the rest of the cutter to make an imprint in the top of my whipped ganache so that I could pipe over it in white chocolate, then I painted the white chocolate piping on my cake with a rose gold lustre. I could have saved myself the money, time and hassle and just piped it freehand from the start and it wouldn’t have looked much different.
Perhaps I would have achieved better results with the ‘happy birthday modern’ cutter as it appears to be a bit less fiddly, but I’m not willing to spend the money finding out.
