I promised myself that when I retired I would buy my dream guitar and take my music studies very seriously which I have done. However, the only way I knew how to study music was the way I was taught when I was young, lots of practicing and polishing the same song, with the song just being the end product of all this endless practice rather than a joy to play in itself (I was usually bored with it by then anyway) I was as Steve would say a “guitar practicer rather than a guitar player.” Steve’s writing style and ideas came as a bit of a shock to an old bloke like me. However they did the trick and I started to enjoy playing (I still do). So although In some ways I agree with the gentleman who gave this book only one star. You still need self discipline and a bit of “slog, blood, sweat and tears” if you are to achieve, it isn’t the ONLY way. So I would say to readers who are considering buying this book please do so. However a bit of “wood shedding” mastering your scales doesn’t go amiss. Simply because it teaches you not only self discipline as a musician, it also opens up other musical options for you.

this is an excellent book for giving you the best information on how to set a practice routine for guitar so you play more and practice less the idea of this book is to get you playing doesnt matter how good you are the more times you play the better you get while your playing that is your practice session .

I sat down and started to read this book and finished it in one sitting. Steve writes in such an easy style that reading this book is like sitting down and chatting with a friend.
As to the content well….Wow! Practice Less, Play More is the most influential book that I have read in a long, long time. The methods are stupidly simple but at the same time incredibly powerful.
My playing and the effectiveness of my learning have improved so much in such a short time that I am still catching my breath.
What is also really cool is that Steve is using 100% of the proceeds from the book to create new programs for cancer patients and their caregivers through his fundraising initiative VØID Cancer.
Warning: Do not buy this book if you are happy to sit in a rut doing the same boring things day, after week, after month, because it will blow you clean out of that rut and into musical outer space.

Get a good tutorial.

A lot of chat about what the book was going to deliver, but didn't deliver anything to me. Short cut ideas are ten a penny - there is no substitute for old fashioned practice whatever shine you put on it. I can already play but wondered what this was going to say. Get a good tutorial and suffer like the rest of us had to. I'm sorry but it's the only way. As an accomplished player I don't rate this.

Not a guitar instruction manual but a guide to do what you're doing...but better

I found myself agreeing with so much that Steve says but had not realised after years of practicing where I had been going wrong...and in fact unknowingly right a lot of the time. This book helped me realise exactly what I wanted to do...play and jam real songs with real other guitarists of all sorts of capabilities. Now have a programme that will lead me to playing at my local club in a few weeks with one of the best local, professional guitarists in the area plus alongside a couple of like-minded amateurs who just want to play music...and with a set list that both performers and audience (albeit a very small, but supportive one) will appreciate.

Applying simple AGILE techniques to learning guitar.... Brilliant !!
This easy to read step-by-step approach prepares you to play, shows HOW to practice, how to advance, when to know a little more work is needed, while all the time being in a 'play' mode rather than just repetitive scale work...
I’ve been trying to play guitar for 20 years, but now I can start to learn properly.
Very enjoyable, and it’s got me back to ensuring I pick up my guitar every day.
I’ve seen huge progress on one song already !!!
For me, the content aligns closely with business process re-engineering studies I did in the 80’s & 90’s, where you step back, define a target outcome, implement a repeatable process framework to control workflow, chunk your work efforts to achieve progress, and allow feedback to influence next steps... (it’s called AGILE today, but don’t let that tech-speak put you off !!)
It worked then, and this works just as brilliantly now, for novices and experts alike.
Buy it, don’t miss out.
Even better is knowing all proceeds go towards cancer care & research.

It works but maybe should be more concise

The methods used in the book are interesting, and to be fair they work.
If you could extract all the important bits, I would say this would be a booklet rather than a book. The remainder seems to be the author telling stories to try and explain the theory, but I'm not sure it adds a lot to the learning experience.
Something to note...this will not teach you how to play guitar, what it does (despite its title) is give very practical practice routines. It encourages you to learn to play songs, and gives solid advice how to do that. One to read, but I recommend the Kindle version as it's the cheapest.
