First and biggest issue is their clamping force, which is a tradeoff between "clamping" and "I really pulled-up on the clamp handle and now I have a big gap between the clamp and the plank the clamp is installed on - let's have the next plank fall in the gap". You SERIOUSLY need to be careful not to over-clamp the clamps, and even MORE careful to check if the clamp(s) slid down the wall a little when you set the siding into the clamp. Checking every/all clamps every time before starting to nail is an absolute "must".
The second shortcoming of the SA903 clamps is the choice the mfr made for the rubber or neoprene pad that cushions the bottom of the plank you are placing in the clamp. BAD choice of colors, because it's critical to make sure there is no gap between the plank and the padded metal piece, and the black color makes it difficult to see the "fit" between clamp and plank when the sun is bright (know what's worse than trying to see in the shade? Seeing something that's BLACK in the shade!)
All in all, the SA903 Gecko Gauges are a real time- and labor-saver; given the cost-difference and the reviews saying that the aluminum Gecko Gauges "clamp better" than the plastic SA903's, I wish I had bought the aluminum clamps, but even so, the plastic gauges are INFINITELY better than NOT having Gecko Gauges!
If the gauges are below or above your line of sight, you can miss gaps that that open up at the bottoms of the gauges while you adjust a board lengthwise and it chatters in the gauge or tips a gauge sideways. I have even had a gauge drop a board while making a critical adjustment at the other end. And this was while up on a scaffold. Need I mention the board was destroyed?
Dusting off boards and washing the gauges seems to help but is not a sure cure and is a lot to ask on a busy job site.
Until someone markets better ones, have faith but not trust in these gauges! SMH
