About the Author

Julia Baird is a globally renowned author and award-winning journalist. She hosts The Drum on ABC TV and writes columns for The New York Times and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her first book, Media Tarts, was based on her history PhD about the portrayal of female politicians. After moving to the United States to take up a fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School, she became a columnist and senior editor at Newsweek in New York. Julia's biography of Queen Victoria was published in several countries to critical acclaim and was one of The New York Times' top ten books of 2016. Julia Baird is a journalist, broadcaster, and author based in Sydney, Australia. She is a columnist for the International New York Times and Sydney Morning Herald and host of The Drum on ABC TV (Australia). Her writing has appeared in a host of publications including Newsweek, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Monthly,and Harper’s Bazaar. She has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Sydney. (Her 2004 book, Media Tarts: How the Australian Press Frames Female Politicians was based on her PhD research) In 2005, Baird was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University.

She is also an owl who aspires to be more like a fish.

Baird lives by the sea with her two children and Australia's clumsiest cat.

She is not the sister of John Lennon, nor any other Beatle.
