I don't think the manufacturer really thought about how parrots like to mess with everything. A few weeks after my initial review, my conure figured out how to release the suction cups. He didn't mind it falling down since he is fully flighted. Soon, that was the first thing he did every time he landed on it. It didn't take long before it wasn't worth putting it up. I had to come up with a solution. What I did was cut 2 squares out of Plexiglas. The suction cups are 2.5" diameter, so I made the square 3.5" on a side. Then I cut a 1/2" wide by 1 3/4" long slot out of one side of each square. Then I pushed the squares over the suction cups. Now my conure can pull at the squares, but he can't get to the suction cups (see photo). Now the perches (we have 2) stay up until we remove the squares and release the suction cups.
We are glad to be able to use these again because they keep him busy and keep his claws trimmed. It's just a shame that I have to modify their product to make it work.
We have a fiberglass shower enclosure and since putting it up we haven't had any issues with it coming off on us. I have taken it down to clean the shower walls and it took some effort to get it to come off so I know its securely on the shower wall. Maybe it would be a good idea to thoroughly clean your shower before applying to ensure you don't have soap scum build-up that might compromise the suction cups. Its been one of the most useful purchases for our feathered friend.
Photo shows perch size, along with some of the toys currently attached to it (not included with perch, obviously!)
I have one in my shower and on my bedroom window that I can move and use in my car! Giving my birds a shower is super easy and easy to clean up. I love that it folds upright and doesn’t get in the way.
