We have used this since our dog turned 1. She is a shepherd mix with a lot of energy. Unfortunately, she is not very food motivated and is very picky about her meals (where, when, what and how). She has eaten this consistently and the formula gives enough calories to keep weight on her. She is still “petite” but until she slows down, I know this will get her the needed calories.
Aside from trying to keep her weight up to normal, she is very healthy. Bloodwork is perfect, skin and coat beautiful, bright eyes, and sharp as a tack. And, of course, lots of energy. No digestive problems at all and her visits outside don’t yield any big messes.
As long as they keep making this, we will keep buying. And subscribe and save makes it even more affordable - along with only having to bring the big bag from the porch compared to a trip to the store.
UPDATE: Aug 2018. Tried Beneful Salmon, bad move. My APBT blew her coat on it and had flaky skin again. Lesson learned, will be buying only this from now on!
UPDATE #2: March 2019 Still the best kibble for my APBT.
This gave my puppy explosive diarrhea (and he has had this food before just fine!)
I'd say it's not to be trusted.
And you can not even return it either. Stick with Chewy.
A 30/20 blend like this one is energy packed. Great for pups, hard-working and sporting adults, and many more energetic smaller breeds. But unless you have a hard-working animal, something a little less rich might be more appropriate for a larger breed senior (especially those that enjoy laying around in retirement) .
Last year, I almost lost him because he ate some pecan shells in the yard and they're toxic to dogs. He was skin and bones and had severe diarrhea and vomiting. He literally had maybe a day or two left. He couldn't keep anything down and eventually got to the point where he stopped eating. I got his food and mushed it up with a lot of water and force fed. This food along helped him pull through while the toxins slowly left his body and gave him just enough energy to escape death. Eventually he started eating more and within two weeks, he looked better than before he ate the pecan shells! His coat is shiny and he doesn't suffer from skin irritations anymore.
He's not one yo yet, so I free feed and give plenty of water. I wouldn't recommend this unless your dog has a ton of energy or is an older dog, bc they will put on weight quickly.
That being said I switched my dogs 3 months ago to this food. My dogs love it. Like it’s dog crack or something. But their coats are now so shiny and sift and their breath is better and they are both much more active and happy. I can’t say the food makes them happier but it sure seems like they have been happier since I switched them.
In any case, my dog loves this food. After only about 3-4 days of making the switch, her bowel movements are normal again. And she's back to being her spunky, hyperactive self. I missed how she would be able to fetch all day. Now she's completely herself again! Grain-free is probably a bunch of nonsense anyway. So what if this is grain-inclusive? So long as it's a complete diet with the proper vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, it should be good to go.
Overall we received 5 bags from Amazon and only 1 was bad. 20% risk I am not willing to take with my dog.
The kibble problems may not matter though because they have changed the packaging and it is now impossible to open the bags without scissors. I'm not sure what the reasoning was with that change, but if you can't get to the product because of the packaging the rest doesn't much matter.
This was my original review:
Great food. Good quality without the expensive hype. My dogs love it, look great and are healthy & fit eating this. I have numerous OFA Excellent, show champions, and consistently get compliments about how great they look.
If your dog has issues with grains then this isn't for them, but otherwise this is a fabulous food.
