It's not too clear how it works, so I will explain: It comes with an internal 18650 lithium ion battery, which is re-chargeable. This will power up the 2 main side lights, but also the detachable hand-held lights when they are fixed in position on the lantern.
The hand-held lights are easy to remove and if they each have 3 x AAA batteries inserted, they can be used as quite useful torches, with both a front/top light with 5 x bright LEDs, or (on pressing the button again) 12 x bright LEDs come on at the side, which gives a more diffuse general light, rather than the more directional light from the 5 front/top LEDs. I should add that you can either have the directional top lights on, or the side lights on, but not both together. As far as I can tell, these take standard non-rechargeable AAA batteries. I suppose you could use re-chargeable batteries, but I don't think they would charge up when you plug the lantern into a USB charging device. I think this just charges the main internal 18650 battery, but I'm not absolutely sure, as the instructions really don't say.
You can also insert 3 x "D" batteries into the base of the lantern and this gives "support" to the internal 18650 battery, prolonging the on-time and possibly increasing the brightness, although I couldn't convince myself that it was any brighter with the D batteries in place, than without.
So, in summary: You have 2 x hand-held torches that are powered by 3 x AAA batteries. You can have a 5 LED directional light, or you can have a 12 LED diffuse light, but not both together.
When you put the hand-held torches back on the lantern and secure them (easily done) in place, you can then have the main lantern giving you light from its 2 side lights (each with 12 LEDs), or you can have it on full power, which lights up not only the main lantern side lights, but also the 12 LEDs on each of the torches. I think these are all powered by the 18650 battery, so don't expect too much time before the battery needs charging.
It is bright with the main lantern side lights, but REALLY bright with the side lights AND the torch lights on together.
You can use it with the USB lead plugged in. There is no charger supplied, so you will need to use one of the ones that you already have at home (5v USB charger).
The instructions say the lamp life is as follows:
With all lights on (main lantern "stationary" lights AND detachable lights) = 2 hours.
With just the 2 main lantern "stationary" lights = 4 hours.
Side lights of each torch = 6-8 hours. Front light of each torch = 14-16 hours.
I've not been able to verify these times.
Overall, I'm quite impressed with the brightness and also the flexibility of this lantern.
Very happy with this lantern.
