Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient? He set about finding the answer and in time came to recognise the key traits and behaviours these children possessed were gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. In the ensuing years Hugh worked tirelessly to study and share this revelation with the world. He launched The Resilience Project, which has become part of the curriculum in many schools and he tours Australia talking to parents, educators, corporations, CEOs and sporting elite. Now, with the same blend of humour, poignancy and clear-eyed insight that The Resilience Project has become renowned for, Hugh explains how we can all get the necessary tools to live a happier, more contented and fulfilling life.

I enjoyed the first third or half of the book with the stories about his sister and time in India, as well as his early teaching & cricketing days but, the rest was largely focused on his own success in getting the project out there. A lot of “name dropping“ and referencing the NRL, AFL etc and how much they all loved the presentations. I feel as though he takes a tad too much credit for teams who went on to win big games after his talks (no mention of teams who lost their next game lol). As my title says, overall, I found the stories fairly interesting for the most part, but not inspiring - maybe that wasn’t the intention. I may feel differently attending a presentation.

Every single person should read this book. Hugh takes us on the GEM journey with one purpose and that is to find happiness through gratitude empathy and mindfulness. I would love to hear one of his presentations. Every school should engage him to present to their students. I feel so good after reading this book. Even though I have a husband with dementia, I still feel grateful for what I have, not what I haven’t. Hugh’s book makes perfect sense and has highlighted all the positives in my life and not the negatives.

In today’s world, living through a pandemic and lockdowns, its never been more important to look after our own mental wellness. This book, through the power of storytelling talks about Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness and how practicing this methods everyday can assist you in gaining a more positive mindset and greater resilience to deal with the day to day living. Find and embrace your ‘dis’ moment every day, be vulnerable and take the time to be in the moment always when you’re with others.

This would have to be the book that has had a profound effect on my life. I have shared this book with multiple people and all some comments have come back.
This should be a subject in schools if not for all teachers and mentors, coaches etc.
Loved it and could not put it down.
Important topic Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness and brilliantly explained by us of examples.

I love this book and your podcast with Ryan! We all need tools that helps us unlock the hard things we accidentally nail down or hide away because they are too painful. No matter how much therapy, reading or sharing with friends we do it always helpful to have new ways to look at or think about life. I love the stories, the humour and the practical advice. Thank you!

I found this book to be very readable, amusing and touching as well. I could relate to much of the content and appreciate the three GEM principles as I had discovered Mindfulness has helped me over the past few years. I will try harder to practice Gratitude & Empathy & I know reading this book has helped me realise how important these things are in life.
