Enter the SKS Raceblade Pro XL. God, these are brilliant.
Every now and then you come across a product that has been so well thought through, and so brilliantly realised that it's a joy. And these are that good - seriously. There is a rubber clamp that attaches to the fork and seat stays, adjustable arms to get the height and angle right, and then hex keys to tighten the whole thing off. The hardest part is screwing the guard to the arms once you've got everything in the right place.
There is no rattle or shudder while you're riding and they do their job brilliantly. They are not quite as good as full length, permanent mudguards - these don't go past the brakes - but they are pretty darn good. I think the only difference between the XL and normal is the length. I went for the longest possible - if I'm having mudguards, I want them to work.
These are excellent,
Fitting SKS Raceblades is much easier than in the past. Clear stickers are supplied to protect frame and forks from dirt which might get between the bike and the mudguard holder. This is a great idea. Clipping the mudguards on is easy, as is adjusting them to properly clear the tyres. The mudguards are of a good length with rubber flaps to further reduce spray. In use they are excellent. No clip on mudguard will provide the protection offered by permanently fitted items, but you will finishing your ride cleaner and dryer with SKS Raceblades than many competitors. You don't have to worry about clearances like you do on CrudCatchers, and the chances of getting loads of mud stuck are also reduced.
I'm delighted with this quality product.
Well it absolutely chucked it down for four days solid. These were fitted to my Giant Defy which after fitting 28's didnt have clearance in the fram for regular guards. I wasnt sure how good they would be as the rears stop at the brakes. They performed brilliantly fending off water from spraying over my bottom and shorts, plus the from protected my shoes.
They are a bit of a faff to fit taking a while and a good measure of patience to get right so they are a close fit to retain the water but don't rub when they move slightly. They secure with rubbers but i also added cable ties in the slots provided. They have stayed secure since 1000+ miles.
I will happily recommend these guards to bikes that have no lugs or clearance for conventional mudguards.
This is wider than my original road guard but my 25mm tyres look fine under it and it sits well on the bike. I found the fitting straight forward with extensive adjustments possible to get the fit just right. I used the paint protection strips (simply clear adhesive plastic) and secured the rubber straps and the guard has not budged in 2 weeks of commuting. Very little rattle where I tucked the front end under the fork, less than everything else that rattles anyway. The black plastic is smart and tough and the spray shield works better than my old guard, so I am glad I broke it. This includes during the recent deluge in Yorkshire, cycling through a lot of water. The guard does not pass forward of the fork/brakes, but I have not found this to be detrimental to performance.
