Not only are the rechargeable batteries replaceable and rechargeable via USB, it also has a backup AA battery compartment. All batteries are included! The lantern even doubles up as a USB power bank to charge your USB devices!

I'm not a fan of the fact that they are on a sliding mechanism (in fact, we had to return one because it wouldn't slide shut and thus off; the return process went flawlessly though), but we try to be gentle with them, so hopefully that won't be an issue long term. They are built much more sturdy than the ones we've purchased that are half the price, which is worth it to me. Our first one of these we bought near the beginning of the year, and we use it every night, charging it every day, and it's still working fine and bright as can be.
I would definitely recommend this lantern.
If I could have any suggestions it would be for a more clear battery status indicator. It only will display blue if charged, and red if not. It will also blink red when the battery is out, before turning off. It would be nice to have a 4 light indicating how much charge is left. Also, the color temperature of the LED is a little high. When walking with others, they complained that it was too irritating to look at on low white, and too dark to see on red.
Also, remember to read the instructions, as I was confused that you must remove the bottom and pull the tabs for the rechargeable battery to function.
Also, not that you need instructions for a lantern, but the included instructions are extremely well written and helpful. They even suggest a quality third-party battery charger.
This product is lightweight and packable for an overnight campout. The aluminum shell also makes it durable.
I bought this for use in emergencies when the power is out. My kids and family feel calmer during power outage and so will yours.
But I also plan to use this during boy scout campouts and I'm also willing to let my kids play with this at night instead of using, and losing, my tactical flashlights.
Weight of the item is great, so for camping/backpack carry it is a good choice. It also allows a USB connection from the Lantern to a compatible USB device such as a smart phone. It won't charge an iPad, but will charge a smartphone and it also charged a Samsung Galaxy tab S 10 inch tablet.
As some reviewers mentioned, it does not remember the light modes, so for example if you turn the Lantern off on red light mode, when turning it back on will illuminate in high mode white light. This may be a big deal if you don't want to bring attention to where you are, like for example hunting. For me it's not a big deal definitely, but I think it is worth to mention it.
The top "cap" where the AA batteries are it's a bit loose on the item I got, even when fully secured and twisted, it does come with a rubber seal around but I am not sure if it will keep the water completely out if let outside in the rain. Again, not a big deal for me but may be for somebody else.
In comparing this Lantern with streamlight's "the siege" model (which I do like a lot), I found that light intensity on max is similar (siege has 300 lumens), the siege is more rugged (and more expensive), it's ipx7 up to 1m water submersion and it does remember the last setting light mode, so turning it off on red light mode will turn back on also in red light mode. But everything else is better for suboos Lantern. The siege comes with 3 d batteries, it's bulky, heavy, very good to have around the house or when going "pickup truck camping" when weight is not so important but not good to carry in your backpack. I think the main advantages of this suboos Lantern are size, weight, features and flexibility (18650 rechargeable and AA batteries, can charge the 18650 inside Lantern and can be used to charge other 18650 batteries from other devices - so no need to carry extra chargers, can also charge other devices from it through USB port). What I would suggest as improvement is making it more water proof (even without a certification) and to remember if turned off in red light mode. Or maybe better release a "rugged" version of this item for a bit more money, for whoever wants it. Overall, the price paid for this item is definitely a go in my opinion. I will buy another one at least.
This has to be one of the best emergency or portable lighting devices I have seen. Let me just list a few of the things this amazing device can do for you:
- It can charge from any USB port
- It can light up a patio for a party
- It can give emergency lighting for about 3 nights in an emergency power outage
- The red light function can be used when camping without ruining your night vision
- It can charge up your phone in an emergency (or even not an emergency)
- and I guess it makes a great camping light :)
The many uses for this wonderful device is only limited by your imagination and giving it less than 5 Stars would be a crime so get yourself one, you might wish you had bought one the next time you have a long big power outage.
They really stand behind Their product; and i like the lanterns very much.
They do take longer to charge, according to the light. however They also go
longer than promised. they are very bright, and even when it goes dim, long
after they are supposed to die (i think mine go atleast 3 hours longer, maybe
4) the dim is useful enough to see enough to find the charger, et cetera.
for me; Jessica made this one of 3 or 4 ordres this year: that were just
extraordinary. the Truth is: for a company to be Truly great- They have to be
exactly as this company is. it's not super common. Thank You Apollo, and
Dear Jessica! :)))
Attempted to do a warranty claim through Suboos website, but registration page to submit just comes up with an error. No reply through the website chat either. Not sure the 5 year warranty means much unfortunately if you can't contact them.
The light itself is light weight and bright, and seems worth the cost. Other people were questioning the charging feature when the AA batteries are installed. According to the owners manual, if the light is closed and off, the AA batteries can stay in when recharging, but otherwise removed when recharging. I suspect this means you can charge it with the light on. Then, you would need to remove the AA batteries.
This is a gift, so I don't want to go through all it's uses. If the cord was included, I would give it 5 starts because you shouldn't expect much more for the cost. Luckily, it uses the same USB cord we all have piles of in our junk drawers, so I'll just throw one of those in and send it as the gift I planned to.
Sadly it is in the trash after only a few months of use.
2/17/17 Within 2 days of giving the lantern the above 2 star review, the company got in touch with me and said that the item has a 5 year warranty. They offered to replace the lantern or refund the money. I really (still) like the lantern and asked for a replacement. It came today and is currently charging for use tonight. Many thanks!
