I purchased the XL size in the Cameo color because I wanted to see if wearing a silk bonnet to sleep could help with breakage and overall care for my thin, fine hair. I need to use it more to see results on my hair, but the quality of the sleeping cap is very good. My husband and I tested to swatch to see if it was real silk (just Google silk burn test) and it is real. I read reviews from many saying that the regular size was too small, so I got the XL. I have some extra room but it doesn't slip off at night, so I would recommend especially if you have thicker/fuller hair.
Way, WAY too small. Purchased this to try and get a second day out of my curly hair. My hair is medium long and fine, never been able to do a thick braid with it so there's not that much of it. I could barely get my hair in this or get it over my head. This crushed my hair pretty tightly against my head and my curls were flattened just by putting it on. Only suitable for a child or very short hair on a very small head. Candy red is a pretty dark blush pink though and it is real silk.
I bought this cap because I wear a CPAP at night. The friction from my CPAP headgear was causing my mid-shaft hair to break in an odd way. My hair stylist suggested sewing silk/satin onto my CPAP headgear. I decided to look for a silk cap and came across this product. I have bangs and did not want something with elastic around my forehead leaving an indent in my bangs. This is a great silk cap! My hair is significantly less frizzy and I do not have to restyle my hair nearly as often! I wish someone had told me about silk caps before!
I was surprised at how quickly my item arrived. Excellent fabric, not the usual thin, see through cheap fabric you usually find on the market. the color was vibrant. Basically, the item looks as described. I ordered the large size because tight caps and hats give me headaches and was not disappointed. I will be getting more in different colors.
First things first, as there's always a lot of debate and confusion on this: yes, this is definitely real lightweight silk satin, not polyester or any other synthetic fiber. (Silk is the component fiber, satin is a fabric made with a specific weaving pattern that gives it a shiny, slippery-smooth finish.) I'm a home seamstress of over 30 years' experience; I could tell this was silk right away but did some basic tests anyway to confirm it. The silk sample did not react to acetone, which melts acetate and acrylic; it floated and started to break down relatively quickly in chlorine bleach, as is typical for silk (bleach dissolves protein fibers, with wool and other keratin fibers dissolving faster than silk, while synthetic or plant fibers remain intact). As you can see in my second photo above, it also performed as expected in a burn test: the large pink silk sample self-extinguished quickly when removed from the flame source, and burned down to a dark bead that crumbled into powdery black ash when lightly pressed. The smaller white sample, a piece of 100% polyester satin ribbon, melted into a hard plasticky lump that does not crumble.
On to the cap itself; I bought both sizes, as you can see in my first photo; light pink is Large and the darker dusty-rose "cameo" is X-Large. It doesn't look like much of a difference and both fit surprisingly well, despite my having a large head (24") and waist-length hair -- but the XL stayed put much better, while the Large tended to slip off or slide backwards frequently. I don't think this would fit well over curlers or very thick locs or long braids; it also may not work well if you're trying to preserve a style with more fullness at the top of the head, where it fits more closely; most of the room here is at the back and sides. The smooth non-elastic front is great if you tend to get headaches easily from the usual full-elastic styles. Tying the ribbons didn't seem to make any real difference in performance to me, the XL stayed on just as well when I left them loose and the L still tended to slide off as much either way. The matte side of the fabric is on the inside, but is still soft and smooth enough that I don't think it's any danger to my hair, but you can always turn the cap inside out if you prefer the smoother satin on the inside. I have not had any issues with dye bleeding onto bed linens, even with the darker colored caps, but I made sure to wash them before wearing; they machine wash nicely on a coldwater delicate cycle in a mesh bag, just hang to air-dry.
The cap is nice enough, the material is thin but sufficiently sturdy. I didn’t care for the style overmuch but I use it for around the house and sleep so that’s fine. I actually use the weird flaps of fabric to tie the cap a little more snugly on my head when I’m wearing it around the house, it helps it stay on better sincerely I have such a small head.
I needed a cap to wear to protect clothes and bedding when doing oil treatments on my hair. I’ve experienced extremely dry, brittle hair as a result of a medical condition, so protecting my hair from further breakage is incredibly important. I sleep on silk pillowcases and use silk head scarves as much as possible to help prevent breakage, and so I needed something equally smooth and frictionless for the cap. Unfortunately only the outside of this cap is silky smooth. The inside feels much more scratchy, more like acetate (like the inside of really really cheap polyester satin clothes). Because of this I have my doubts about this being genuine silk. My Alaska Bear silk pillowcases are genuine mulberry silk and the inside of those cases doesn’t feel scratchy like the cap does. The inside of the pillowcases feels a little less smooth than the outside, but by no means is it scratchy feeling, so I suspect this product isn’t what it claims to be. I can’t easily wear the cap inside out because of how it’s designed, so there’s no easy way around the scratchiness and that makes it hard to want to keep using it.
I have a very big head and one-size-fits-all doesn't usually work for me. I also toss and turn all night so I never expected any cap to stay on. This cap fit and stayed on all night! I just received it and only wore it once but I'm really pleased so far! I don't know if those three flaps of material that hang down are ties or just decorative but I didn't need to use them anyway. Did I say I'm really, really pleased?
I was really excited about getting this product to use to cover my hair when I slept but very disappointed when I woke up and had a significant indentation on my forehead that took a couple of hours to fully disappear. I had to go to work with this mark on my head and felt ridiculous. Great concept for the product but just poor overall use. Had to return it. :(
This claims it’s 100% real silk. It comes with a sample fabric. Real silk smells like burnt hair when you burn it. This smelled like plastic. The cap feels more like satin, so it *might* contain some silk, but that’s not what it’s advertised as. Satin is supposed to work just as well (as long as it’s weaved with silk), so I figured I’d try it, just in case. I also have shoulder length hair. It’s no longer thick and curly thanks to illness and chemo and I’ve lost more than half of it. The cap barely fits my hair and leaves marks across my forehead in the morning. My hair actually looked worse after a week.
My mom wears a headband at night with her CPAP machine, and she has naturally thin hair any way, so it was no surprise that this headband that was rubbing on her scalp started to give her bald spots. I immediately bought her one of these, and her hair started growing back because the cap reduced the friction on her hair. Literally a hair saver! I even bought one of these for myself, and it significantly reduced my frizz and hair breakage. This is an amazing product!
