The mat appears to be made of the same materials as the ice/heat packs I use for my back, I'm aware that eventually they do succumb to leakage (albeit they are subjected to extremes of temperature) but can often be patched with a puncture kit or some clear silicone. The mat came with an advice/care note in the box about punctures etc. At the end of the day it's never going to be easy if your pet has sharp claws or is a chewer etc but at this price I personally think it's decent quality. I made a simple pillow case type cover from a thin cotton sheet to help keep the mat clean and protected from claws and damage which so far has worked well.
My Golden Oldie (Retriever) struggles with the heat these days, I wasn't sure if he would go near the mat but he seems to like it after I laid it on top of his favourite bed, and anything that helps keep him cool and happy is a bonus as far as I'm concerned!
Update - unfortunately it’s torn within 2 weeks. My dogs arthritic and gets up awkwardly, she doesn’t particularly have sharp claws but seems to have gone through. This happened in the night, I woke to her whining and found all this sticky stuff down her side she had led down in it, I had to bath her in hot soapy water at 5am in the morning, still don’t think I got it all off.
Conclusion - although this is an excellent product for keeping dogs cool and my dog loves it, don’t think it would suitable for any chewy dog/puppy or dogs that get up stiffly as it’s quite easily torn. Pity really... I wouldn’t leave your dog unsupervised on it or alone in the night unless in the same room. It says non toxic but doubt if they licked it up it would do them much good. It’s on my hands even though I washed/dried them, they are still sticky.
I do find that as my dogs (springers) lie on it they can displace some of the gel inside leaving the patch that they're on a little thin and so lacking support. I just placed a thick folded blanket underneath to give a little extra padding for them. I'm sure they don't care but I feel better. It's very easy to clean being water resistant and non fleecy I can just wipe it clean.
I can't tell if they use it just because it's in the same place as the old mat or because they really do like it, but I feel better knowing that it goes some way to keeping them cool. Although typically just as I've bought it, the weather turns.
A week or so later, the dog is more used to this mat now & loves it.
