Author Joy Ellis has surpassed herself in this second book of the DI Nikki Galena series! I was riveted by the story - it's well written structure, thrilling plotline and characters which felt so real, foibles and all. The author is able to describe the haunting atmosphere of the setting of The Fens as only a person who really lives there can. It is a "character" in its own right.
The story delves further into the background of Sergeant Joseph Easter and he is put into the position of having to bring to light the situation which has haunted him, caused him to leave the Army and question himself as a man.
We also see the slow softening of Nikki and how she drops her mask even further whilst around Joseph. I can see their relationship slowly building into something that may become more close and personal. We also get a hint of a mystery surrounding Nikki and the local doctor, and their mutual dislike of each other. You can see Joseph already trying to ferret out the mystery with humour.
An adjoining subplot concerning Nikki's neighbour weaves itself throughout the novel finally becoming entangled with the plot of Joseph being haunted by the man responsible for the incident that caused his pain.
I won't reveal any spoilers, a full explanation of the story can be found in the blurb and by professional reviews here on Goodreads.
Suffice to say I am trying to hold off reading the third in the series until the author brings out more about DI Nikki Galena and her team. (I have already read the fourth in the series)
An exciting read that keeps the pages turning.

This second book in the Nikki Galena series was as good as the first. We get to know the character of Joe Easter a bit better and more about his military past.
Nikki is moving back to her farmhouse on the Fens and reconnecting with the locals. However, the unexpected and traumatic suicide of a friend causes her to think there is more to the story. Joe too is shocked when a person from his past reemerges and military style executions begin to occur. As time passes it becomes apparent that Joe may not be a mentally strong as he would like others to think.

I kept saying, ‘please don’t let it be her’, all through the early/middle part of the story. Then I changed it to, ‘please don’t let him get hurt’, during the ending third of the story. I was completely unsure how the seemingly two separate stories could possibly be connected. Joy Ellis has constructed a superb plot that comes together in an unexpected way at the end.
The relationship between DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter continues to develop. They have definitely moved from colleagues to friends. The rest of the team are showing great loyalty and real interest in the welfare of their superiors.

I read the first two books in this series together. Some books are easy to read and these fall into this category. Once I started I wanted to keep reading. The characters are likeable and engaging and the relationships develop nicely over the two books. The story develops well and there is enough action to keep it interesting without becoming violence for violence sake to appeal to some readers. Looking forward to the next book.

Enjoyed the ongoing character building & imagery of the Fens as book 2 of the series progressed. The evolving mystery of who "did it" grabbed my undivided attention as the pages turned towards the finishing chapter.
Would have preferred less of the colourful language, but understand this was part of the character building.

I have read the two books from this author. What a story teller. Loved the characters and the story lines. Hoping that there will be lots more books about this great duo and team. The wonderful stories woven around the Fens.I am certainly looking forward to more titles from Joy Ellis. Keep them coming.

It got 5 stars because it was a secretedcrime thriller just how i like them.
The story had me gripping at my seat and scared out of my wits at times . The thrill of reading a book like this is you can't sleep at night as you hear every little bump in the night. The stories of DI Galligar arethrilling and close to the truth of things that happen realy

The story line is captivating but I get frustrated with the poor editing. So many words like “the, an, with” etc are omitted in sentences. The reader has to fill in the blanks. For such a great series, the editing needs to be better.

Acceptable Light Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2018Verified Purchase
ing my way through the DCI Galena books for one reason, they are more entertaining than the others I've downloaded and deleted after the first chapter... but... Ms Ellis could do so much better (if she had a decent editor, it would help.) Apart from the outrageous storylines already mentioned by another reviewer, an opinion I endorse, there is the problem of the writing. As she walked in, As she picked up, As she started the car As she...along with 'drew a deep breath, took a deep breath and repetition, Joseph wiped his plate with the last of the bread and wiped his mouth with the napkin. Grrr!!!!! I'm an editor by profession, these things are guaranteed to put me off. Oh yes, and punctuation, wrongly used apostrophes, for a start. This is why I said Ms Ellis needs a decent editor, someone who could correct that and someone who could include a few contractions. In the heights of emotion people Do Not Speak Properly, they tumble their words, I didn't, rather than I did not - it's there, people, look for it and mention it and perhaps Ms Ellis' editor will earn their money for a change.
But - readable, light read, put it down and forget it. 'A gripping thriller' it is not. An acceptable crime read it is. There's a big difference.
The big problem is constantly finding new enemies for Nikki and Joseph to battle and so it gets a tad foolish at times, stepping outside the boundaries of accepted logic. This is a fault inherent in many crime books, I've left similar reviews for them.

SHADOW .....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2018Verified Purchase
Although I enjoyed this book I did think the plot was a bit to far fetched to be believable, but hey ho it's fiction! The reason for just 3 stars is mainly through careless grammar etc. Things like 'there' instead of 'they're', etc., wrong use of me/I ,and again wrong use of apostrophes. Whether these are Joy Ellis's mistakes or the fault of whoever typeset the book for e-readers I obviously don't know, but suggest Joy gets her books properly checked before they are published as continuous errors end up alienating readers.
My other criticism is although this is the second story of the Fens I really cannot picture Nikki. Is she tall/short, fat/thin, well dressed or sloppy? At the moment I see her as a Vera type figure. Joseph is ultra good looking with fair hair, Cat seems to be some kind of punk, but I would like to see all the characters better brought to life.
I will read the next in the series and hope there are less mistakes ....... and that it ends without the 2 main characters in hospital again.

One of Joy Ellis' earlier books in the Nikki Galena series which I hadn't read before. I really enjoyed finding out about Joseph's earlier life and his story tugged at my heart.
As is usual with Joy's books, it is impossible to put them down, so if you have an appointment or you have work to do, don't pick one up! On the other hand, if you love a thriller which has you turning the pages, sitting on the edge of your seat and over-reacting when the phone rings in your silent house, you will love to read this!
A nemesis from Joseph's past in the Army comes back to haunt him, literally, and it happens just as Joseph has got back to work and started a relationship with a very attractive woman. Then, a series of murders shakes him to the core because they are all look-alikes for his nemesis but he keeps catching sight of his nemesis at the scenes of the murders. It's a very dark, deep story but Nikki will not be beaten and vows to solve the mystery. As she works her way through the events, it begins to dawn on her that her feelings for Joseph are growing and she is jealous of his new love, until that new love turns out to have a hidden agenda!
It really doesn't matter if you read these books out of order. The important thing is to read them, otherwise you have missed such delights!

Unbelievable storlyline, but reasonably entertaining.

Only three stars. The story-line was just so unbelievable. Moderately entertaining I suppose, but towards the end I started thinking that I wished it would end, and quickly. A few other things were rather irritating, such as referring to someone as 'detective'. That seems to be an American thing rather than British. guv, boss, sarge, DC, Di, Ds yes, but detective no. This is the second book in the series that I have read and although I will read the third if the ending results in the main characters being maimed, it will be the last. Why is it necessary for every detective novel to end that way?

Brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 December 2019Verified Purchase
Another brilliant story by Joy Ellis. She truly makes her characters come to life. I honestly didn't want to put this book down. Besides the suspense of waiting to find out who the killer was, I was also rooting for a magical romance between Joseph and Nikki. Then, shock, horror; Joseph became attracted to Bryony Barton, a woman who seemed to appear from nowhere. Will Nicky and Joseph ever become more than work colleagues and friends? Maybe some more light will be shed on this subject in the following book.
