I spent 2 weeks in the hospital and was pumping at least 90 mls each session on the Medela Symphony. I did tons of research and had friends who raved about the Spectra so I ordered this pump. I also ordered extra flanges and special Spectra containers. After going home I was still pumping 6-8 times a day since I exclusively pump for my baby who is fed through an NG tube. Each day I was getting less and less milk during each pump on the Spectra. After 2 weeks I wasn’t pumping a single drop on the Spectra and had to supplement with formula.
I started beating myself up and feeling guilty that I was the problem since I could only get milk out with my manual hand pump. However, I started thinking maybe it’s the Spectra, so I rented a Medela Symphony for £47 a month which I just got today and my first 2 sessions gave me milk. Looks like it wasn’t me and now I’m out £150 on a pump that almost killed my supply and left my nipples in so much pain that I could barely put a top on.
The pump seems to be very efficient in doing what it was designed. It extracts milk fast and efficiently, in a painless manner! We had a hand pump before that and any comparison would be unfair. The noise during operation doesn't bother us at all - we think it is quiet enough! Some reviewers online suggest that bottles from other brands might be better and suggest all kinds of mods to use the pump with other bottles. Maybe its true and with some modifications the pump gets even better. For us there was no need, we were amazed on how efficient it is every time. We always operate it on battery mode (not plugged in) which is very convenient. Light is very useful! Closed loop means milk doesn't enter the pump mechanism thus all components where milk flow are easily washable. The two available modes (letting down and expression) do what they were designed for. Frequency and strength of suckling is adjustable to find the sweet spot of max milk extraction and most comfort. Overall a great great little pump, we were extremely satisfied and it does what is supposed to do well!
I exclusively breastpump (so I constantly and consistently pump my milk, put it in a bottle and feed it to the baby) and it has worked like a champ!
I pump every 3 hours going from vacuum 8-12 (12 being the highest setting) and the motor has been putting up with the demand!
The suction is still great after using it for almost a month and the parts are still in good condition too!
It's amazingly quiet with very minimal hum at the highest setting, which I think is remarkable.
I pump about 8 oz (4oz per boob) in 10minutes so it's not time consuming and it gets all the milk out!
It's amazing and at par or even BETTER than Medela Freestyle and it's just HALF the price!
Just get it!
