Product description

Review

This book is the product of the combined wisdom of two hugely experienced, and hugely generous, pedagogues .... This is not just a great book about music education - it is a great book about music and what it can mean to people. ― Phillipa Bunting, The Strad

The book is beautifully presented, both as a resource for self-study, and, via 'personal inventories' in each chapter ... studies of the self. It is also designed as a course textbook for groups of students. ... this is a book that can be recommended highly. ―
Jane Ginsborg, British Journal of Music Education

Review

"I love what this book says about the art of music. When I think of how many years, master teachers, serendipitous or just fortuitous moments of realization and connection between body and soul, how many once-in-a-lifetime revelations I have accumulated and, NOW, to find it all in one book! I am stunned, amazed, and forever grateful." --Richard Stoltzman, Grammy Award-Winning Clarinetist "From the Stage to the Studio is an essential keystone for any musician who wishes to build a career that arches between the pillars of performing and teaching. Its guidance is strong, thorough, inspirational, and practical, including everything you need to know, as well as workbook activities that help you grasp your own personal understandings and lifelong learning goals. I recommend it highly." --Eric Booth, International arts learning consultant, author of The Music Teaching Artist's Bible (Oxford, 2009) "From the Stage to the Studio is amazingly comprehensive. The insightful, practical and creative advice of Watkins and Scott exceed what could be taught in years of pedagogy courses or private lessons. Kudos to the authors on their infinitely practical suggestions, which will be invaluable to musicians, teachers and their students!" -Barry Green, Bassist, Author of Inner Game of Music, The Mastery of Music, and Bringing Music to Life "This is not just a great book about music education - it is a great book about music and what it can mean to people." --The Strad

CORNELIA WATKINS teaches pedagogy at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University, and has been a private cello instructor for forty years, most of those in Houston TX, where she was preparatory instructor and Lecturer in Music at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. Her passion for pedagogy has led her to present teaching clinics and master classes across the country, including educational sessions at nearly every ASTA national conference since 2003. In 2019 she was the featured Pre-College Master Class clinician, and this past year she offered a session on a "Bach Treasure Hunt" for those who want to teach more than just the notes when introducing students to the Suites. (Go to rosindust.com for more information and worksheets.)

Corky is on the committee of Wisconsin CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance), an organization which promotes excellence in all areas of music teaching. She has written several articles for American String Teacher, Wisconsin School Musician, and The Strad and is the author of two books, Rosindust: Teaching, Learning and Life from a Cellist’s Perspective, and, with co-author Laurie Scott, From the Stage to the Studio: How Fine Musicians Become Great Teachers.

After many years in Houston TX, Corky and her cellist husband Max Dyer moved to Madison WI in 2018. They have 3 sons, Daniel, Jeremy, and Michael.
