5.0 out of 5 stars Two Maul tales in one book
By Old Grim's Reviews on 20 March 2019
Darth Maul is an all-time favorite for me in Star Wars since his first appearance in May of 1999. No character will ever match his entrance in the series. While I owned the Hardcover of Shadow Hunter I always wanted to get the Novella by James Luceno that is featured in this paperback. (Both are pictured)
While the first story Shadow Hunter, set just before Episode I, seems to follow a story of Maul almost always succeeding in his mission given to him by Sidious. It takes away from the mystique of his character somewhat as opposed to enhancing it. It has multiple characters with their own POV, so this is NOT just on Maul. That story for me, while well written, is only a 7.5/10 as it is not about Darth Maul as much as you would of hoped for considering the title. And knowing that the Jedi do not consider the Sith to be anymore than a myth by the time of The Phantom Menace the sequence of events tend to be more frustrating in this book knowing that.
A very nice thing about this story is that we see more information on the events that transpired in Luceno's own Darth Plagueis a decade later.
The next story, while listed as two separate short stories on the back of the paperback, is Darth Maul: Saboteur. Is about Maul's first solo mission set roughly a year before the events of Episode I. And once again feature lightly in the Darth Plagueis novel.
If you are a fan of Maul or Star Wars this book is for you.
