Excellent product vital for those with diabetes. It provides a quick response to low blood sugar levels..for me within 15 minutes and then I feel back to normal ie not fatigued and not overtreated.
It is known that if you mix different types of carbohydrates then the blood sugar level rises more slowly. Can't remember where I read this but I think it was Bright Spots and Landmines .. that author is brilliant (has diabetes himself and he is on one of the following websites) ...he wrote about diabetes..or it was Diabetes Daily/Weekly or Diatribe.
These are glucose which is one type of carbohydrate. Whilst sugar is made up of two different carbohydrates ie glucose and fructose.
Unfortunately those Jelly Beans that "professionals" recommend are slower to work (yes they taste good and are better than nothing obviously) because they have more than one type of carbohydrate in them ie sugar. Even worse is the food that contains fat and/or protein as it will be even slower.
This all means unfortunately that it is better to treat hypoglycemia with one type of carbohydrate only. Otherwise you can overtreat as well as slide up to a high blood sugar because you haven't recovered fully from the low blood sugar and continue to eat whatever is there until you feel better.
I have tried to make it a habit to have glucose tablets available around my home, car and bag.
Better than Glucodin which only has 1.5g of glucose per tablet..yes I have these as well for minor low blood sugar levels, but they taste like nothing. One tablet increases my blood sugar by about 0.7 mmol/L so have to have many of these to get an increase ie more than twice the number of tablets cf the 4g tablets.
You can split the 4g tablets as there is division line in the centre. One of these increases my blood sugar by 2mmol/L which is usually enough.
If these cost too much an easy alternative is a jar of glucose syrup in the supermarkets. Queen brand 500g in a plastic jar with a red lid in the cooking section I think where the sweet condiments are. Retails for just under $5..about a teaspoon is about 7g of equivalent carbohydrates.
