I was a bit unsure about reading another Claudia Carroll book after I was so disappointed with ‘Our Little Secret’, but when ‘The Women of Primrose Square’ became available on NetGalley, I couldn’t resist. This, of course, meant I needed to read book one, ‘The Secrets of Primrose Square’ first.
I’m glad I gave her another chance as this was really enjoyable. There indeed are lots of secrets in this book, and the chapters keep you hanging at the end of each one. The book alternates between Jayne, the lovely old lady who will help anyone out. Susan, the bereaved mother. Melissa, Susan’s daughter and Nancy, the assistant theatre director from London. So when one chapter ends on say Nancy, and it leaves it with a mini-cliffhanger, you have to wait for a few chapters of the other characters before you find out what was happening. This really helps propel the book forward, as you are dying to get back to one of the characters to find out what happened.
The secrets, overall, aren’t earth-shattering just normal domestic things but still heartbreaking. This had been my main concern as with ‘Our Little Secret’ the big reveal had been rather anti-climatic. I was hoping the whole way through this book that it wouldn’t be the same. I needn’t have worried. The reveals are slow but in a more drip-feeding sort of way. They don’t come out of nowhere and whack you around the head, but instead, you have the story pieced together slowly. This works very well in this story.
Overall, this was a delightful and entertaining book. It was easy to read and pleasant to discover all of these new characters. I really hope some of them pop up in ‘The Women of Primrose Square’ where it will be following all-new characters and new storylines.

I will read everything and anything but it is rare that I feel strongly enough about a book to put my thoughts on paper. I have also read a number of Claudia Carroll’s earlier books and while I enjoyed them, it was in a lighthearted, holiday read frame of mind. The Secrets of Primrose Square caught my attention in a very different way. The author deals with serious issues in an engaging manner and develops the story well. I found myself emotionally attached to the four main characters to varying degrees and genuinely wanted to see how their stories panned out. Although the ending was slightly picture perfect, I would and have recommended this book to a friend.

This is a real page turner from Claudia. I loved how the death of Ella was explored through the eyes of all the different people she was connected to. I could feel Susan's pain and was willing her to try and pull herself out of the depths of despair and get herself clean from her addiction to tranquilizers before she went the same way as her daughter. You can't help but worry about poor Melissa trying to hold what's left of her family together when she's too young to cope. Jayne is an inspiration for the older woman and she shows there is life and love after death. Finally there is Nancy who is dealing with her own demons and showing that facing up to problems is far better in the long run than running away.

I have to say this is another fabulous book from Claudia. Primrose Square feels very much like the kind of place I would like to live. I loved all the characters in this book and although I read this the wrong way round with the sequel first and then this - a lot of gaps were filled in for me and I am glad I read them in that order. I think I would happy if there was a third book to this series.
