The downside is that there really isn't a lot of water in the bags, so it is not a huge amount of ice. So don't expect one of these sheets to last very long. In a basic, soft-sided cooler, after about 3 hours, they are normally completely melted. So they are fine for like keeping a lunch cool for a few hours, but they are not going to be useful for anything more than the most light duty use. Don't expect these to replace those big blue ice packs - they just don't last that long.
Other products are cheaper; in this case, you get what you pay for. This is the second one I've purchased; the first one lasted almost 8 years before 2 of the 9 pockets leaked. I kept using it after the first leak; after the second it lost too much effectiveness. Here's to another 8 years of daily use!
EDIT Sept 17: Back to say one the nine "cubes" soon lost its liquid, but I don't care - this continues to be very helpful to me for injury relief and for the price, I'd absolutely buy it again if only for that purpose.
The reason I gave it such a low review is that the plastic material to protect the cells is very thin (stress very). In my case, the fold of another Ice mat bag pierced two cells and the liquid stained my cooler :-( Ultimately, I was left with the impression that the product was designed with forced adolescence in mind. It's too bad as the concept works if you don't like water mess of ice but want the flexibility that a folding mat provides but in the end, I'll vote with my dollars and find an alternative.
Note to Thermos reps (if you read this): Increase the thickness. To justify the cost, market the product as heavy duty. Consumers are savvy enough to recognize the value in that.
My advice is to find the exact size you need, don't order a large sheet with the intention of cutting them down to size, this makes any brand vulnerable to leakage.
