I ordered these tall military style boots from Danner:
However when you have boots that are taller you need socks that not only are tall enough and stay up all day, but also have heel cushioning. The heavier the boot/the more I walked the more I noticed that the heel area was chafing because that was where most of the horizontal force transfer was happening.
Therefore, I ordered these socks.
Pros - socks are thick the whole length. Have a nice top elastic which keeps it secured to the top of the calf. Sizing is good, I'm a size 10 foot and it fit over the top of my calf muscle.
There's extra padding on the heel, about a 1/4 inch of soft padding which extends fairly far up the back of the heel.
Cons - none! Really love these socks.
Like if it was useful!
And they're toenail-resistant. I know some folks for whom toenail maintenance is very difficult, but that means they tend to shred their socks. These socks stand up to the nastiest pointiest toenails. And they last forever. Okay, years. Still, socks that last for YEARS, literally (I checked my last order date, it's three years ago!) is worth it. The extra padding is great for needy feet.
I ordered some different versions directly from Thorlo (the ones I think I need, Amazon doesn't have). I'm going to have to see what works and what doesn't.
But I am a die-hard Thorlo fan, and won't wear anything else. Just have to find the ones that work for you. Too much padding, in my case, caused the pain I was trying to get rid off in my heels.
I bought these to wear with a new pair of 9" logger boots, and I can say with certainty these are the best socks I have ever owned.
I'm a somewhat averaged sized guy at 5'11" with a size 11 boot. I bought these socks in size large, and they come up to just below the knee. More important, they STAY right where they are just below the knee while working in them. They don't sag. The padded heel is a very nice touch. My feet also feel a bit cooler when wearing these socks in the heat and humidity.
These socks are 5-stars all the way. You won't regret buying them.
I remember in Parris Island, they let you go to a little exchange and you all shuffle through, nut to butt trying to buy whatever might help you get through all the hygiene and hikes, and I threw a pair of socks into my cart among other things. I tore off the tags and finished training.
Well, I've went through a lot of socks, but that one pair was just so much better than all the other pairs I tried. More soft, more comfortable, warmer, but also cooler in that my feet didn't get as sweaty as any other sock. The socks were unmarked so I started looking for the same sort of sock in exchanges. I was actively seeking these socks in every base or station I went to! As it was, Amazon was the saviour. Also, every sock I have tends to fall towards my boot. Not these. They hug the calf, never really need adjustment.
I wear these around the barracks or to bed, people can call me a boot idgaf these are the best socks I've ever worn
on Concrete/Asphalt. (Thorlos) OTC nice soft, dry could be thicker in heel & forefoot mainly where it counts shin/shaft has nice padding also overall-rating (4 of 5 stars). ***Next (DarnTough) OTC seems better quality tighter weave (may retain more heat build-up) but no hot spots & not uncomfortable at all. After washing felt more thick & comfy, felt like fibers expanded in a GOOD way! Overall-rating (4.5 of 5 stars) **Clincher LIFETIME (no question asked) WARRANTY!!! WHO i ask WHO in these days gives you a NO questions asked LIFETIME-WARRANTY... Made In the U.S.A Ooooops... NO ONE PERIOD.
Next Sock test, (EuroSock) Mountaineering Heavy-Weight Sock. Technology seems advanced, but true-life test will determine real-world worth. Again my quest is Cushion/Padding above all. UnderArmour may be next test if EuroSock does not rate a (5 star) rating.
to be continued... This is my honest rating, no paid blogger here just some one paying above average price looking for Quality Boot Socks!
