They don't take too long to reheat in the microwave and are good for a snack/light dinner after having a heavier meal for lunch. The six pack was handy because they lasted me a while and effectively worked out to a fairly decent bulk purchase discount compared to the single unit price when ordering via Amazon.
I do like to always have some of these style quick rice sachets in the cupboard (they literally take only 40 seconds to reheat in the microwave), but I usually just get plain brown ones so I can mix in a tin of tuna or salmon or other different flavours and spices as it lets you mix it up a bit more.
I prefer sachets over the plastic cup based pre-cooked rice packs but I'm not sure which is actually better from an environmental perspective (probably neither), but cooking brown rice in particular has proven difficult to me in the past and these are so handy for a "I need food, gah - what's in the cupboard right now" moment!
[I received a free batch of these via Amazon's Vine program when it initially launched but system issues prevented me from being able to post a review at the time - that looks like it has been fixed, but it also looks like they launched the vine program prematurely.]
I'm not normally a pre-prepared packet rice consumer. Be it white, brown, red or black rice, I like my rice made at home in a rice cooker.
That said, when I was offered the choice of a couple of varieties of Uncle Ben's rice to sample for free in return for my opinion in the form of a review, I was curious!
The packet tears open very easily without the need for scissors.
The directions say to either heat in a microwave for 90 seconds, or, put the contents in a pan with a tablespoon or so of water and heat for a few minutes, which is the method I used.
I wasn't expecting much, but the flavour of the rice was a very pleasant surprise. It has an authentic Mexican spice flavour, spicy enough to leave a mild zing in your mouth and It has all the nuttiness you would expect from brown rice.
It tastes healthy, flavuorsome and wholesome.
For our taste it needed additional salt which is much more desirable than the other way around.
We had the rice served as a side dish, and because it's so flavour packed, this also made versatile base for adding veggies, beans and left over bbq chicken and turning it into a quick and delicious one dish meal.
I'll be buying it again. Highly recommended!
This product I personally would not recommend. The rice is bland, the spices are quite overpowering and the corn is limited.
I was keen to try this product, as it was marketed as Mexican style, but what I quickly realised was that the Mexican style was the inclusion of limited amounts of corn, and quite overpowering spices.
The rice itself was hard and didn't taste fresh.
However, I found the ease of cooking simplistic and quick.
