Cracking end to a brilliant Trilogy

I have been looking forward to this for ages. I re-read the first two books in anticipation and have just had a wonderful time reading this final installment of the trilogy. Loved every bit of it, especially Tor’s Valhalla - not for twats. And that the Owsla have PONCHOs. I would have liked a more detailed description of these. Perhaps they could feature in a further story? I have a lovelorn teenage son, not unlike Finnbogi, so am grateful for the advice he was given which I have duly passed on. He’s a great character, as are the whole Wootah tribe, the various baddies, all the extras and (my favourite) the brave and beautiful ladies of the Owsla. Angus Watson’s writing is a joy and he generously thanks his publishing team in the Acknowledgements - sadly there are LOADS of errors: spelling, punctuation and a glaring mistake that puts Freydis in two places at once. However, I was planning to give this five and a half stars so will just deduct the half for these mistakes. Do correct for future versions and sack your proofreader! The other books have typos too...sorry...

Very entertaining series of books

Congratulations to Angus Watson for an outstanding effort. I truly loved this quirky and witty epic saga. I will do my best avoid plot spoilers and concentrate more on the writing style and beautifully created characters. The author manages to incorporate both humour and tragedy into the story which involves gory combat and more monsters than you could shake a stick at. The basic plot involves a long road trip with numerous encounters and disasters along the way. There are romances and a painful coming of age story. The names of the characters are enough to raise a smile: Ottar the moaner, Freydis the annoying, Paloma Pronghorn, Chogalisa Earthquake, Bodil Gooseface, Sassa Lipchewer, need I go on. The battles and encounters are described in brutal gory detail and there are moments of deep sadness to contrast the humour. So long since I enjoyed such a wonderful set of books. I should add that I strongly recommend the audible narration which is brilliantly read and adds to the overall experience.

A long walk to a flat ending

Cannot be read in isolation and so it is a three book slog to a rather disappointing ending. This book is basically the story of a trek through a variety of scenery meeting people and things usually killing them and losing a few members of the band along the way. Some of the episodes are “let’s bung in another incident” which is annoying rather than exciting, almost pointless and the last few chapters fall a bit flat - riding to the denouement on a giant rabbit seems just silly to me and generally the book is not as humorous as the others. The final showdown with the Warlock Queen is over in a flash - literally - which no one understands least of all me. Unfortunate as the first two books were good.

I read this trilogy to try something different. Normally i read sci-fi. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are well fleshed out (I really could not have gotten on with the central character. But that proves he was well written). It is fantasy so expect the fantastical and unbelievable. But the book is set in a real period in time and based very loosely on real nations that existed in North America. You can actually Google or visit the real places, which I like. This book raised my curiosity about American history before 1492. These books gives you what you'd expect. Warriors fighting their way through different locations on a quest to save the world.
