How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsIf you like thinking about the future, you'll like this book.
Reviewed in Australia on 23 June 2017
I've read a lot of business books in 2017.

As I've read more and more books across business and tech, there's three criteria that I judge these books on. I know I'm going to love a book if it:
> Introduces me to new ideas
> Makes me question long held assumptions
> Balances big picture thinking with practical tactics
For me, this book delivers strongly on all three.

I don’t agree with all of Thiel’s opinions. But if you like thinking about the future you’ll probably like this book. 👍👍👍

2.0 out of 5 starsCulture overwhelms strategy
Reviewed in Australia on 17 September 2018
It overlooks culture and is perhaps applicable only to the USA environment. I also think it sets a standard for success that is far too high for the great majority of start ups, that being 10x better than competitors. This excludes a vast number of successful start ups.

I was unable to read further after I read the following:

"the ECB might as well print “Kick the Can Down the Road” on the euro. Europeans just react to events as they happen and hope things don’t get worse. The indefinite pessimist can’t know whether the inevitable decline will be fast or slow, catastrophic or gradual. All he can do is wait for it to happen, so he might as well eat, drink, and be merry in the meantime: hence Europe’s famous vacation mania."

How can you take anything Thiel says seriously after THAT?

Vacation mania? Because we don't work ourselves to death? Because we have paid maternity leave? It's funny how happiness levels in Europe have improved more than in the US, attributed at least partially to the work/life balance issue... And here comes Peter...

Stopped reading and will return the book. No thanks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading, not worth to keep

Read the entire book, some part is very interesting and brilliant; some is poorly explained. In my opinion, it is a book of personal opinions which remain "personal".
Good :
Zero to one, opposite the act of "creation" to the act of "improving"
Start small
Market Domination
Being specific
Lessons drawn from successful start ups

Not good :
Theory of optimism/pessimism, the comparative view and critics of Americans, Europeans and Chinese are highly simplistic and personal.
Too much useless importance given to the personality trails of a founder, having nothing to do with leadership (question not mentioned at all)

Loved it! This book hits the nail on the head and is not afraid to stand against convention. Just the read I needed while preparing a new 0 to 1 startup.

Peter Thiel provokes us to ask the challenging questions of our business in order to ensure we're creating new valuable products and services. Not just incremental improvement. Great read with plenty of actionable insights.
