We have been using the 20oz thermos daily from the day it arrived and continue to be impressed.
Boiled water remains scolding hot after 6 hours, very warm after 12 hours.
Cold water remains icy cold much longer than hot water.
Large spout for faster-flow pouring.
Lid components are easily detachable allowing simple cleaning.
Compact and light enough to carry around.
Don't pour too quickly as water will spurt through the smaller opening above the spout (vent allows smoother flow).
In our experience, there's no noticeable difference between products produced in Thailand/Japan, but the price is significantly different.
Overall great product with a very minor inconvenience.
It has a easy to use sipper with a small air hole to ensure that your favourite beverage continues to flow smoothly out of the flask. Opening the lid is as simple as clicking the open button (minimal force required) and the lid will flick open and the lid springs ensure that the lid remains back so that your nose/face doesn't touch the lid.
What I love about it is that the lid can be completely disassembled and you can wash everything easily.
The locking mechanism is easy to operate with one hand and the lid (to screw on to the flask) is also very secure and requires no/very little tightening pressure when screwing it back on.
There are a number of colours to choose from but I went the safe option of Black to ensure fingerprints and minor scratches are hidden. The Silky Black colour does have a slight reflective gloss but is not something I was worried about and overall doesn't scream attention if holding this in public or placed on a desk (eg. Work).
I have dropped this a few times from off a table (1 meter from the ground) and no real visual surface scratches but your results may vary.
The Zojirushi SM-SD60-BC is not widely available in my region (Australia) and generally don't have an authorised reseller making e-marketplaces like Amazon.com.au and others the only other option to get this item into the country. Free shipping is only available from Amazon US if the total purchased item is over $49 (with Prime membership). So if you are not in a hurry just wait for Amazon Prime Sale days where US shipping is generally waived and free (when Amazon US fulfills the order) otherwise expect to pay nearly half the cost of the product on shipping fees.
- actually keeps cold drinks cold (i put ice cubes in it and it will still be ice cubes after more than 24 hours)
- actually keeps hot drinks hot (not that my coffee lasts long but temp stays consistent the entire use)
- easy to clean (detachable parts that come in contact with your mouth)
- extra lock (to prevent accidental spillage in bag)
- doesn't come in any bigger sizes like 1L,2L or 3L (max is 600mls)
- pricey (but worth it!)
Top international reviews
And then I came across this Zojirushi. It was like they had gone out of there way to stay hidden on Amazon search, but I found it through a google search. It is amazing. For one, it's super light, feels like half the weight of the Contigo. And it is 100% leakproof, with an easy screw top and no seals to wear out. The most amazing thing is that it keeps drinks hot for ever. Well, OK, ten hours and still hot. Those reviews that talk about it keeping things too hot is true. I sometimes need to cool the drink down before putting the lid down, or it's too hot to drink for hours. Same with cold. I put ice in in the morning and it was still there the next morning!
All is not perfect though. The main problem is that the canister is very narrow (but fine for drinking from), which means it is hard to fill from the double jet drink machines. Coffee drinks with foam are especially a problem as you can't get both jets positioned over the hole. We are thinking of using a plastic funnel to get around that. The other problem is that it is quite tall, so you have to hold it at an angle on most drink machines to get the liquid into the hole. It is also a bit fussy for cleaning, with a few components to take apart, and because of the narrow opening, needs a bottle brush to clean thoroughly (but careful, it has a great non-stick surface to prevent off-tastes, so you don't want to scratch it).
So, if you can live with the minor downsides, it is super light, miraculously holds 600ml, is totally leakproof, and has outstanding heat and cold retention times.
𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 0.235 kg (9 oz)
𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 66 millimetre (2.6 inches) circular [own measurement]
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: never seen anything like it. It is almost as insulating as the huge Thermos work series flasks! Expect to burn your tongue 12h later!
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞: leaking does not seem possible with this design, and I've bounced it around under many travel conditions, 𝑢𝑛𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 you misplace or somehow poke holes in the inner, silicone gaskets.
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: all drinking operations can be done one-handed including unlocking and opening.
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭: high insulation also means no touch temperature issues.
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: steel walls and no pointy cap exterior bits makes this tougher than most other travel flasks, despite the plastic cap.
★★★★★ (5/5) 𝐁𝐏𝐀-𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬: most of the mug is stainless steel with an impressive inner, nonstick white coating (nothing like Teflon). The Stopper and the Lid Cover are polypropylene, the Lid Cover Gasket and Stopper Gasket are silicone and the exterior paint is Acrylic Resin.
★★★★☆ (4/5) 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: sleek, uniform, narrow design. It even seems to have two steel-lined holes in the cap, front and back, which could thread string loops. Comes with no loops, handle, nor carry case though.
★★★★☆ (4/5) 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞: relatively spill free, but the inside of the cap can get drops on your face when near the bottom of the drink. Tip: keep the lid back with your index finger. Do not burn your face with hot drinks by suddenly tipping the mug!
★★★★☆ (4/5) 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧: very easy to clean, though the cap has two, easily separated internal parts (a nipple-like gasket and the rest of the lid), so be careful to keep them together and preferably clean them separately.
★★★★☆ (4/5) 𝐒𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞: no strange smells new. However, the silicone gaskets may retain some smell from smelly hot drinks after many uses. If you only use the bottle for the same drink, then its no problem, otherwise, you may want to invest in a special cleaner or another bottle for non-smelly drinks.
★★★★☆ (4/5) 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: paint at bottom slowly chips away. Given Japanese manufacturers' attention to detail, I am surprised at this paint flaw.
★★☆☆☆ (2/5) 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝-𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞: the manual says, "Do not allow infants or small children to use this product ... Mishandling may cause injury or scalding.". This obviously depends on the child and the drink, but it's a sensible warning. I added an extra star because both a closed lid, or locked lid and its very strong insulation will prevent all but the most unfortunate or ingenious small child from hurting themselves simply by touching the bottle.
★☆☆☆☆ (1/5) 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞: probably not due to the external paint durability and perhaps silicone gaskets. The manual says, "To protect the paint, print or stickers on the outside of the Main body: Do not use a dishwasher or dish-dryer. Do not boil to sanitize. Do not use bleach on the outside of the main Body."
Other cleaning instructions from the manual:
► Do not clean with thinner, benzene, abrasive cleaners or other harsh cleaners.
► Do not use chlorine type bleach.
► Do not soak in water for an extended period of time.
► Wipe moisture off thoroughly to prevent water stains or rusting.
According to the manual, Zojirushi sell a special cleaning detergent called "SB-ZA01" or "SB-ZA01E", specifically for removing coffee and tea stains. However, Zojirushi America on Youtube also state you can try any other non-bleach coffee pot cleaner as long as they are safe for stainless steel and nonstick coatings.
If the base dimension stated at the top does not fit your car's travel mug holder, Zojirushi seem to do another product series called "SM-YAE" or "SM-YAF" which are specifically made for car holders. I do not have one to check their dimensions though and the dimensions are not mentioned in the manuals for some reason.
Included image is the final page from the Zojirushi SM-SA/SM-SC Instruction Manual which has a handy Specifications table and other information.
𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: probably the best overall travel mug available; anything else and you must be looking for some very specific feature or style. I will be getting more as gifts.
Now for the most important part of my review, everything people are saying in these reviews is correct, for hot drinks like tea, this flask will keep it hot for 8 or 9 hours, and i mean hot, after 9 hours my tea was as drinkable as my morning cuppa. so if you are going to sip your tea or coffee, but mainly tea throughout the day, then leave the top off for 5 to 10 minutes before screwing the lid on, otherwise you will burn your tongue, if you will not drink any for a few hours then leave it off for 2 minutes or so, this product is really that good at keeping liquids hot. at £25 it is a bit on the high side, but well worth it in my opinion, the colour of this flask does not bother me either way, matt black, metallic black, although the metallic look on mine looks really well, and according to one reviewer is actually the better product overall. 600ml is a good size able to hold nearly 2 big mugs of tea, it is long and slender, really good for getting your hand around, videos on youtube show how easy it is to clean every inch of this flask, i would highly recommend this zojirushi 600ml black flask, i hope to get many years of good hot tea all day long from this flask, making a cup of tea before you go to bed and having it ready on the bedside table when you wake up is another good reason to spend your money on this flask, the sipping area is also well thought out, no dripping down your chin. if anything changes about this product in the future i will re edit this review.
1. Item's name
It is named "Zojirushi Stainless Steel..." but the stainless steel is covered by a plastic finish. This is noted in a bullet point at the bottom of the description (which sadly I did not notice. I was too taken up with the incorrectly named "stainless steel")
2. What the product cannot do
I bought the item to have a small travel mug for my creamy, milky coffees/hot chocolate drinks from Starbucks etc. But when I read the instructions I found that the travel mug is not recommended for nearly all drinks, so it is useless for my purpose. It can also be difficult to clean.
To quote the instructions:
"Do not fill the Mug with the following...dairy products and fruit juice ...Fruit pulp and tea leaves."
"When filling the Mug with sports drinks: •In order to prevent rusting and/or pinholes, rinse the inside and outside of the Main Body and the Lid Set immediately after consumption. •Clean the inside using a soft sponge to protect the nonstick coating from getting scratched."
So what drinks can be used in the Mug? It seems black coffee, water and black tea already made up. And the product can rust even though it is supposedly stainless steel? And the nonstick coating is easily scratchable? The mouth of the mug is quite narrow so I'd have to cut down a soft sponge in order to clean the inside, if I were filling it with sports drinks.
3. Product packaging
Zojirushi did provide a pamphlet in English, but all the packaging, box, labels and the little tag that goes around the mug's neck were 99% in Chinese/Japanese which I found annoyingly uninformative. I am wondering if the product was intended for an Asian market rather than an English-speaking/European one, or is this the future of imports from Asia, post-Brexit.
4. The seller demands return postage, so be warned if you ignore my advice and buy it then decide to return it.
Wife is a very keen coffee drinker was dissapointed with the Contigo I got her that did not keep the temperature at all. She was delighted with the Zojirushi that she said does keep the temperature very well. She was puzzled when I told her that some reviews indicated that it kept temperature too hot.
- The nonstick interior is easy to clean and my dish-brush can barely reach the bottom of the mug.
- It keeps the coffee hot for a long time: I have opened mine after eight hour and found the coffee to be just on the right side of scalding.
- - Some, justifiably, complain that it keeps the coffee too hot. If so, I have found that simply waiting around 10 minutes before putting the cap on addresses this issue.
- The lid is tight and does not leak.
- No annoying pitched noises due to air entering or exiting.
- Elegant, clean, purposeful design. It simply is gorgeous.
If you need, or think you need a travel mug then this is without doubt the mug to buy.
Btw I bought this for my hubby to use on his way to work in the car but it's too hot to drink he said(method in my madness)😆
I love it and highly recommend it... worth every penny...👌
Lightweight but keeps my drink hot for 5 hours.
Brilliant locking lid allows you to drink on the go or in the car (you will get fury tongue unless your a hot drink animal).
600ml is a great size, two generous mugs of coffee is just enough for some addicts on the morning commutes and it slips into the bag more comfortably than a bulky thermos.
And unlike a thermos if you drop it it does not crack and damage the thermal properties of the flask.
I think it's made in Taiwan, but had Japan printed on it, so props to Taiwan.
Bought to cut down on weight when hiking and fishing and to save me carrying a stove when UL camping for single night trips its more than paid for itself
I preheat it it with boiling water the night before and then fill it with whatever I need (coffee or plain boiling water usually)
I find the contents are still hot over 12 hours later (depending on how often i open it and how much i drink in the meantime!)
Worth every cent for day hikers and outdoors people
Absolutely Fantastic, close it up & pop in your bag if heading off for the day. Totally watertight with no leakage at all.
The drink spout detaches for easy cleaning. A perfect travel companion.
