Alexa's easy tips to set up your Smart Home

Alexa can help turn your house into a smart home. Want the lights dimmed? No need to get up, just ask Alexa. Want the temperature a smidge warmer? Alexa’s got you covered. By using your Echo device or the Alexa app, you can voice control a host of compatible smart home devices, like lights, cameras and plugs to make life that bit easier. To get started, just follow these easy steps...

How To Set Up A Smart Device
First, you’ll need to set up any smart home devices by following the manufacturer’s companion app or website. Some smart home devices need a skill to connect to Alexa. If your device requires a skill, go to the Alexa app first and enable it. To enable a skill, open the Alexa App --> More --> Skills & Games and search for your required skill.

*Remember your smart home devices need to be switched on for them to work with Alexa.

Once that’s done, it’s time to connect your smart home device to Alexa.

1. Open the Alexa app
2. Open More and select Add a Device
3. Select the type of smart home device you want to connect
4. Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions

How to Set Up A Routine
Routines group together actions so you don’t have to ask for each one individually. Think of them as Alexa shortcuts to save you time. You can activate Routines via voice, time of day, with your smart home devices and more. To learn how to create the right routine for you, follow these steps...

Featured routines
To browse recommended and popular Routines:

1. Open the Alexa app
2. Select More from the bottom navigation
3. Select Routines from the menu
4. Tap Featured and tap on the name of a Featured Routine
5. Tap Enable and your new Routine is ready to use

Create your own
To customise your own Routine:

1. Open the Routines section in the Alexa app
2. Tap the + button in the top right-hand corner to get started
3. Customise what you want your routine to do and at what time
4. Once set up, tap Enable to save and activate

Voice-enabled routines
You can also voice-enable a featured routine. Featured routines can be found in the Alexa app.

Try saying:
"Alexa, enable the Good Morning routine"
“Alexa, enable the Good Night Routine”


Turn off your lights with a quick swipe
To turn off all your smart home devices in one go on an Echo Show device, simply:

1. Swipe left from the far right hand side of your device screen.
2. Tap on the Smart Home icon and you’ll see all of your devices listed that are available to switch on/off without needing to say a word.

Start dinner while at work
With a smart plug routine you can turn on the slow cooker and have dinner ready for when you step in the door. Need help meal planning?

Try saying:
“Alexa, show me slow cooker recipes”
“Alexa, give me winter recipes”


Check on your furry friends
With the Furbo dog camera and Skill, you can check on your pups from anywhere and even give them a treat.

Try saying:
“Alexa, set Furbo to on”
“Alexa, tell Furbo to toss a treat”


Pause your FireTV
Forget missing a moment of your favourite show, just say, “Alexa, I’m getting a snack” and Alexa will pause your FireTV and turn on your smart light routine.

You can voice-enable the routine by saying, “Alexa, enable the I'm getting a snack routine”. Or to enable it via the Alexa app, select More, then Routines, and you will find it listed under Featured.

Wind down the day

Make household announcements
Announcements let you broadcast a voice message on multiple Alexa-enabled devices. They’re perfect for calling everyone to the table, or try using the Alexa app to say, “Alexa, announce I'm on my way home”.

Soothe your baby
Alexa even has routines to help calm your upset baby. Triggered by crying, it calms your little one with soothing music.

Try saying:
“Alexa, enable the comfort baby routine”

Use Drop In to check-in with others at home

Drop In lets you connect instantly to supported Alexa-enabled devices, like an intercom. Use it to start an instant conversation between your devices or with your Alexa contacts. When you receive a Drop In, the light indicator on your Echo pulses green and you connect to your contact automatically. To make Drop In simple for the whole family, pick easy to remember device names like ‘kitchen’ or ‘living room.’

To set up Drop In:
1. In the Alexa app, select the Devices icon located at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Select Echo & Alexa and then select the device you’d like to enable.
3. Select Communication.
4. Select Drop In and then select which permissions to enable
