Good product - lessens sound quite significantly (probably more than half). I'm learning the violin and wife's been complaining since I often make mistakes, resulting in a high-pitched screeching sound. She was getting upset since she likes to be the only one at home making such sounds. Marriage saved.
I am a total beginner when it comes to playing violin and purchased this in the hopes that it would save my wife and daughter's ears from absolute devastation. This practice mute is about as good at dampening the sound of the violin as putting a light sheet over your ears to evade the sound of a blood curdling scream of a toddler. Alright, it works slightly better than that. If the volume level of a standard violin is a 10, this mute will reduce the volume to a 9.5. While technically not a lie that it dampens the sound, it simply doesn't do it to a great enough effect that I would recommend anyone else buy it. Now I just have to hope trying to learn to play violin is not going to end in divorce.
Makes it so I can practice with people home and not be embarrassed. This sounds like no big deal but for shy musicians like myself, it can be the difference between playing and not playing.
