To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
It actually makes a massive difference. Don't get me wrong, you're still VERY audible (4 stars - could be quieter), but take it off and then play. Oh, you're going to be heard quite well at a distance.
Do I think it could be used for a small house/thin-walled apartment? That's... iffy. Possibly. You won't want to play without it (or possibly a better mute), but you still may be heard.
Only thing I noticed is that you need to be careful when mounting it on the bridge as it is tight (likely for good reason). I used an app to see the pitch before and after and it appears that it doesn't change the pitch...however I'd say the sound quality will change slightly.
Fits bridge perfectly, stays on perfectly, but does not decrease the dynamics of the violin at all. Do not expect to be able to play in the other room while someone is sleeping, they will curse at you. Better off looking for a different, softer rubber. Thanks anyway.
It is larger than I expected. I used to have a smaller one that was not as noticeable, and I could easily see over the top. I have not played violin in many years. I wanted to be able to practice and not bother anyone. When I improve, I may not need to use it as much. For the price it was a great deal.
I was ready to dump this chunk of rubber in the trash but my very tender eared wife just told me that from the other room they could barely hear me torturing my violin. So, I've moved my review from 2 stars to 4; it is still too loud but apparently it is an improvement. I'm looking at getting a "silent" electronic violin but this will do for now.
It does the job. Its simple and it works. However, it is quite flimsy of a mute, and not made of a tougher rubber, so the fit is not the best on my violin. It is kind of finicky to put on since the "legs" of the mute move around so easily. Most common mutes are made of this matte kind of rubber thats a bit tougher and less easy to bend, while this one is made of this shiny rubber and can be pretty much bent in half. It may rip easier, or rip apart sooner over time. To wrap it up, it is a mute that works great, but the material kind of surprised me. The fact that it works like any other mute merits it a 4 star.
