The first half of the book is entirely in the 1st position, while the latter half in the 1st 3 positions on the violin. Pro: Some of the etudes sound nice and are fun or semi-fun to play, yet some etudes aren't nice sounding. Con: These etudes are only in the 1st and 3rd positions with almost no practice in the 2nd position or higher positions. With the above in mind, I think (my opinion) these studies will offer a challenge for a 2nd year violinist yet only a small challenge for a 3rd year violinist and minimal challenge for a 4th year violinist.
I have been playing the piano for over 20 years and recently decided to give the violin a try. I can tell the exercises are great, HOWEVER, these are not for pure beginners. There are a lot of basics you need to cover just for the sake of muscle memory training (if for nothing else - the theory behind it is not difficult it just takes practice). I'm keeping it because some day I hope to be at this level just not now.
Finally, Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics is published with water resistant, glossy, heavy stock covers! Every classical musician has stacks of these golden beige books with disintegrating and detached covers.... I was delighted to find that this volume has been upgraded as far as the cover. Inside are the classic, wonderful violin exercises that millions of young musicians have played over the years. Wonderful addition to our families music library.
