As I couldn't find a copy of The Morning Glory cook book in Britain (it is a famous restuarant in Vietnam), I purchased this book instead as a gift for a friend. It did not disappoint. In fact I would say this is even better than the book I had tried, unsuccessfully,to obtain. Not only is it an excellent cook book, full of beautiful illustrations and authentic Vietnames recipes , it also takes the reader on a nostalgic journey through Vietnam. Some reviewers have criticised it because it is anecdotal and doesn't concentrate solely on recipes/cooking. However, I think this undoubtedly adds to the charm of the book and am about to purchase a copy for myself. I suppose it all comes down to personal taste/preference.
I purchased this book after having become enamoured with the food of this nation travelled the length of Vietnam in a month-long journey. The book is quite simply excellent - lots of authentic recipes from different regions, and each region has a description of it to accompany the dishes. Some of the ingredients are impossible to get in England but a quick Google finds a local alternative, e.g. spinach instead of betel leaves. Only obvious recipe ommission was Bun Bo Hue, a classic dish from the imperial city of Hue.
I took this book with us to Vietnam. It was a mine of information and we took great pleasure in finding the locations described and the food. Ah, the food. This book helped us order our meals, more knowledgeably.
I cooked the cha ca recipe and it tasted even better than the cha ca I had in Hanoi.
I purchased this book as a present for my daughters boyfriend. He is very much into his cooking & wanted a book with Vietnamese recipes. This book seemed perfect. A great history about the author, great, clear and concise recipes and excellent photos and illustrations. He is delighted with it and has cooked several recipes already and has said the recipes are easy to follow.
Having just returned from a trip to Vietnam I decided to attempt to recreate some of their amazing dishes. This book did not disappoint and I found authentic dishes throughout described in a simple way. The images throughout the book are stunning too...very stylish indeed.
I always love stories behind food so on that count, this book delivers too!
This book is so pretty, with nice, thick matte paper. The pictures and design concept are by Luke's girlfriend and simply amazing. Storytelling is interesting, probably the most beautiful book I've ever owned. I haven't tried any recipe yet but can't wait to!
I've just had a holiday in Ha Noi and bought this book to try to replicate the food I was eating in the street cafes. It works! The ingredients have been easy to find, and the recipes I have attempted have tasted just about right! I find it is a quick, healthy and tasty method of cooking and love it! The stories in the book are lovely too - I recognised alot of what was written about Ha Noi and had even been to one of the restaurants mentioned. Very useful book.
this is the best book for genuine recipes. I went to a Vietnamese cookery class in London and the teacher recommended it. It it brilliant and the travelling notes and Luke's story are a window on this fascinating country for those of us who have not been there. It enlightens us about the food served by giving us anecdotes and one can almost smell and see the food on market stalls. It is a lovely book I would recommend to anyone who loves travelling and food.
I've been in Viet Nam last year and I found it fantastic! The food is really really nice, especially in the north and that's why I've bought this book. There are veruy nice photos thet reminds to this beatiful country as long as the stories. The recipes are clearly explained.
