This book is written in a friendly manner with plenty of humour. I was surprised at how quickly I was able to play a simple tune on the banjo, I like the old photographs and history that is included in the book. The author's passion for the instrument shines through which is inspiring. The cd plays the bare bones of the melody and then again with the "clawhammer lick" .. I would recommend this book to a complete beginner.
If you are a complete beginner and only have this one book and only have one banjo, just do everything this book says and you will be a clawhammer samurai in no time. But I only have one banjo and I like to play it in standard GDGBD tuning. The lessons in this book require the banjo to be re-tuned to GCGCD. I don't like to leave my banjo in that "I don't know how to play it" tuning, so now I need a second banjo. Thanks Wayne.
This is a nice beginner book. I am disappointed that there are only 6 songs in Open G (gDGBD) tuning. Most songs are either in Double C (gCGCD) or Sawmill (gDGCD). Perhaps I'm lazy about wanting to keep a standard tuning. The front of the book is a good history lesson or how to. The back is your circle of fifths and how to play with a capo when jamming with other musicians. I do like the section that spells out each Tunings or Keys notes. Overall a helpful book with good information.
I am a beginning to intermediate clawhammer player and I really enjoyed learning the songs in this book. The songs were not difficult and it was fun to learn about all the different tunings, a couple of which I had never seen.
