I keep going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. I settled on 4 because the book is doing what I wanted. I am learning the ukulele. The DVD is actually a great addition to the book. It is very helpful, especially since I haven't heard of at least half the songs in the book. That's why I was debating the lower rating. The songs are super old and not engaging to anyone close to my age. I'm 37, just in case you were wondering. The songs are not the types of songs that inspire one to want to play. It becomes tedious to work through. I'm not expecting Lady Gaga, Beyonce, or Adele, but something from this century would be nice, or something with a hawaiian/tropical feel. I'd take Margarita Ville or a 50's song. Anything!!!
The songs are: He's Got the Whole World Pay Me My Money Down When The Saints Go Marching In Streets of Laredo Tom Dooley Worried Man Blues Banks of Ohio Jamaica Farewell Amazing Grace Swing Low, Sweet Chariot The Sloop John B. O Mary Don't You Weep Midnight Special
I got a ukulele for my birthday (I'm 48), and began self teaching. I've spotted lessons near me, but I want to try it myself for a bit. I have a guy I follow on YouTube, and then I ordered this lesson book for beginners as a supplement. It comes with internet access to lessons as well, which is great... except the lessons are one long video.... Like there aren't Lessons 1-however man listed separately. It's a hour and a half video. So I have to remember where I was from one week to the next. Tip: I started noting where in the video certain pages are, so I can more easily find my spot. But it would be even better if they were listed as separate videos.
I selected this book because of the dvd included. I have used it for a little more than a week. (I played woodwinds through elementary and secondary school so, I have some basic knowledge of music.) The instructor demonstrates tuning the instrument, holding the uke for maximum playing ease, and how to practice the exercises in the book. He takes time to play the songs slowly at first so, the learner can get comfortable with the chord changes and gauge his/her progress. The book's songs are not likely to wow a younger audience but they do teach chords, making chord changes and strumming techniques. I think beginners will appreciate the opportunity to see, hear, pause for practice, and then, play!
When I first put this DVD in my player and Mr. Casey came on to teach me about the ukulele, I assumed it was re-purposed footage from another era, but soon he mentioned smart phone apps, and I realized this was current footage. That said, the techniques, and lessons taught on this disk move a beginner along rather swiftly. Keep your remote in your hand, and pause, practice and proceed, and if you are a rank beginner, like I am, you will see marked improvement in no time. The book itself helps to clarify what is presented on-screen, especially strumming patterns. The price is right, it's effective, but though the songs are standards, they are of another time. I have recommended this to coworkers, who are also learning the uke.
I just started playing the ukulele earlier this week. This book helped me learn essential skills such as strum patterns and chords, and within a day or two, I was strumming and singing songs with the help of this book. The video access is helpful, but a basic knowledge of music is helpful as well. I grew up playing piano, but the ukulele is the first string instrument I've played.
