5.0 out of 5 starsThought provoking essays
Reviewed in Australia on 30 June 2019
Thought provoking, " mature" , written in a perspective language sometimes yet beautifully done.

Definitely recommended for a lot of "soul" searching.

The title should give the hint. This is hard work and at times contradictory which makes it hard to keep engaged. Ended up choosing some of the essays of interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great advice – but ends up being quite superficial with 4-page long chapters on average.

I'm not sure whether this book was a mistake, or one of the best books I've read. On the one hand, it does not have a main idea or contention that's backed up by several chapters of detailed discussion, and instead feels like a collection of short blog-posts regurgitating basic self-help advice (that I've mostly heard of) – which, in my opinion, does not constitute a proper book. However, I feel as though the author is nudging my life towards a positive direction each time I turn its pages, and that I tend to be happier and more mindful on the days where I read this book.

I suppose I've just listed the (perhaps obvious) pros and cons of a book titled with "101 Essays..." My main doubt is that this book, like many ordinary self-help books, have given me doses of spiritual highs without leaving considerable lasting impacts on my life. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Just after finishing though, my impression is that this book packs a large quantity of self-help advice, but perhaps wasn't enough overall for me to justify its price.

Some real enlightening beautiful moments but at times repetitive and convoluted. Unecessarily wordy, when simpler could have made the point.

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of recycled shopping list styled paper cut-outs
Reviewed in Australia on 9 August 2021
The title is a misnomer. There are some essays but the majority are numbered list of short statements, the sort found on cheap magazines that were then cut out, recycled and put together in a scrap book in no particular order. You will find ten things successful people do, twenty things intelligent people don't and then seventy of some other things.

The author has some talent in her way with words, but with this kind of writings she is not going to win any literary awards. The fact that this book is so popular and gained such reputation is actually quite sad.

There are a few bright ideas that sadly are presented as bare statements, no beginning, no end, very little to support and arranged with little structure or logic.

The narrator has a nice voice but the shopping-list style of the book really ruins the flow. It does not work as a podcast that one can listen to when going for a walk. When you write a list of ideas, the number makes sense and readers don't really pay attention on the number. But when you read the lists out loud, the numbers are just distraction from the ideas presented. The publisher can glamorize this book as 'thoughts catalog' all they can but it is really just a messy pile of paper cut-outs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to the hype

I'm halfway through reading this and I'm finding it really difficult to get through. I bought this after seeing many people on social media rave about how this was a 'must read'. While I have come across a few interesting points, this book is mostly lists of basic, Pinterest - like ideas with small descriptions about life. It's definitely an easy read and has the potential to be motivating but misses that point by being repetitive and mundane.

Great snippets of other books however they make for fast paced reading and that lack of continuity makes it harder to truly engage.

3.0 out of 5 stars different than expected

i havent finished the book but it is not what i expected. some of her points i completely disagree with, which is always ok! but she is so negative and straightforward about some topics and anyone impressionable may believe her which is not good. like she simply states that none of us are extraordinary. that's not a very positive outlook hahah we should all think we are extraordinary in our own way!!! and some of her essays are just obvious statements about humans and she doesnt elaborate and how this point changes anything or means something

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit cheesy but so far so good

I’m about 50 pages in and the book is good! it’s a bit cheesy but has some good points and makes you feel a bit better about things or yourself. it’s definitely really sweet and assures you you aren’t alone but i feel like some of the points are like okay we get it it’s a self help book lol. but i am only at the beginning and i’m definitely going to continue so that’s a good sign, i would give it a shot they might state some things you need to hear. also my book came a bit damaged from delivery but i don’t find that a big issue as it’s a paper back.

Inglese super scorrevole
