I enjoyed this CD. The leading work, Lux Aeterna, is quite wonderful and beautifully performed. Despite the large choir and venue, these performance are well-controlled, intimate, and very well-engineered in my opinion. This is my first exposure to Lauridsen, having arrived by way of the a cappella music pouring out of the Baltic. As I have found elsewhere, there is a magic to the Baltic choral music which is not to be found here. I don't know what the magical melodic and/or harmonic formula is, but the Baltics seem to have a corner on it at present. Anyway, this music is very enjoyable, quite atmospheric, and totally worthwhile. In my view, the CD is weakened by tracks 12-16 ("Mid-Winter Songs"), which sound Copelandesque sans Copeland's distinctively memorable tunes. I hear hints of Copeland elsewhere in this music as well. Still, this is a good production that I have listened to several times, not the best in its genre, but definitely recommended if you like this type of music.
I originally heard the piece "Oh Magnum Mysterium" performed live and thought it was so beautiful that I wanted to own a recorded version. I looked over many reviews of recorded performances and ordered this one based on those reviews. I'm not disappointed and feel it is a good collection of Lauridsen's work (though I'm no expert). It was recorded in 1998 and so, to me, the fidelity isn't superb but, overall, I am very pleased with the CD. My only disappointment is that the CD's jewel case arrived chipped at the corner - when the case is opened, the cover disconnects from the bottom half. There was a fair amount of room inside the shipping box it was packed within and it contained only a few air pillows, so perhaps the break occurred in transit. Or..perhaps it was damaged before it was shipped - hard to know. This happened to another disk shipped to me in the past via Amazon. I didn't bother to return either of them because the disks played fine - too much time and trouble to return.
