Worked for chipping my cat at home to use a microchip-sensing auto feeder. It was tough to penetrate the skin (pretty small gauge needle, I estimate ~15g) but it was detected by the feeder's sensor successfully. I would not recommend doing this at home yourself unless you have prior experience with subcutaneous injections. Also, not all vet clinics will insert for you using a microchip kit you bring in, so best to confirm with your vet before you buy.
I mainly got this to use with the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door. It works perfectly! If you want to use it for pet ID in case your pet gets lost, yes HomeAgain does charge you to register your pet. In my opinion, the first year should be included with the chip. There are free registries out there as well.
I can't give a complete review unless the chip helps my dog get home, which I hope is never an issue. But my vet didn't carry microchips and asked me to purchase one for her to inject. This came quickly -- in time for the appointment. The vet knew just what to do and the dog didn't seem to feel a thing when the chip was administered. This came with information about the website to register the chip for a lifetime fee of about $21. It's apparently registered with three national registries which weren't named, so I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.
It was what I was expecting. Same thing you get at the vet but either a little or a lot cheaper! Package seemed very thin and cheap though, but it doesn't really matter too much. Just a warning if you've never seen one before, the needle is pretty big compared to tiny blood needles. Recommend one person to hold and another one inject the microchip. Unless you and your dog are that awesome, then it won't phase either of you...
Product works as expected. I had my vet implant it in my 5 month old puppy about 6 weeks ago and we tested it this week. Works well. Vet said that if implanted too soon, it can migrate down the shoulder. She won't implant before 5 months. Also working with the Home Again crew was very easy. They are great.
We had this implanted in our Savannah cat. She was very expensive and if she ever got loose we wanted to be able to find her. This device is great and we just had vet put it in and registered online for tracking.
